Tigers' Homecoming rally falls short, 20-13

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - When Campbellsville University and the University of the Cumberlands meet one can usually count on the game coming down to the final possession. Neither team disappointed the Homecoming crowd at Finley Stadium and HIG Field on Saturday, but the Tigers came up short on a comeback try, falling 20-13.

Trailing 14-0 to start the fourth quarter, Campbellsville took over on its own 14 yard line late in the third quarter. Nathan Cooper, who returned to the field after a four-game injury absence, moved the Tigers down field on 5-of-6 passing for 65 yards to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Wayne Coffee. David Hon's kick was good to pull within a touchdown of the visiting Patriots.

Cumberlands responded though, eating up nearly six minutes of clock time en route to its third touchdown - a 3-yard run by Deyonte Shannon. Michael Chandler blocked Justin Dyer's PAT attempt, leaving the score 20-7 with seven minutes to play.

Campbellsville fired back again, this time with a 43-yard pass from Cooper to Stan Warrenhuffman to move the Tigers into the red zone and send Warrenhuffman over the 2,000 career receptions mark. Cooper followed with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Diaz Bolden down the Tiger sideline. Hon's kick hooked left, leaving a seven-point difference, 20-13, with 6:37 to play.

The Tigers looked to have a momentum tilt just a minute later, as Earl McCann picked off a pass on second down, but the play was nullified by a holding call. Cumberlands went on to run four minutes off the clock before punting to Campbellsville. The Tigers were held four-and-out following the punt, stopped the Patriots in four downs to take the ball back over with 12 seconds to play. The stop was too late though, as Campbellsville gained 18 yards and a first down with a pass to Warrenhuffman, but was unable to strike a last-second comeback.

Cumberlands' first touchdown came late in the first quarter after Campbellsville helped keep a Patriots' drive alive by jumping off sides on a fourth-and-4 play at the Tiger 43. Freshman quarterback Andrew Brunnert capped the 80-yard drive with an 8-yard keeper on the option for Cumberlands' first touchdown.

Campbellsville tried to respond before the half but continued to stall around midfield, going into the Homecoming celebration intermission trailing, 7-0.

The Patriots struck quickly to start the second half, scoring in the first 1:39 of the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Brunnert to Zack Stroub.

Brunnert threw for 112 yards in the game on 8-of-14 passing. Cooper was 12-of-23 for 169 yards, as he became the Tigers' all-time leader for pass attempts (470). Will Warf started the game for Campbellsville, but exited in the second quarter, going 4-of-12 for 57 yards.

Cumberlands' players Wes Hazelhurst and Jeremy Gardner led all defenders with 15 and 12 tackles, respectively. Campbellsville had nine players with five or more tackles, led by redshirt freshman Blake Young's nine stops.

Campbellsville drops to 3-4 with the loss. The Tigers will travel to downtown Montgomery, Ala., next week to challenge Faulkner University in the Crampton Bowl (1215 Madison Ave, Montgomery, AL). Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
