Jackson wins 285-pound weight class at Cumberland Open

LEBANON, Tenn. — Nate Jackson led the way for Campbellsville at the Cumberland University Open this weekend, as he scored 14 team points finished in first place in the 285-pound weight class.

CU also had three other grapplers place second, third and fourth, at the Open.

Jackson, a redshirt sophomore from Dayton, Ohio, swept his competition with four decisions. He took down Adam Boyd from Life University (6-3), Jeremy Quarshie from Reinhardt (5-2) Jose Carillo-Garcia from Brewton Parker (2-1) and Tommie Turner from Cumberland (7-4).

Freshman Kolten Radaz was one win away from a first-place finish as well at 133 pounds. Radaz won three consecutive matches (3-1, 11-10 and 3-2) before falling to Stephen Ireland from Life University (13-11). He earned 11 team points.

In addition, the Tigers also had a third- and fourth-place finish. David Sparks was defeated in his opening match by University of the Cumberlands' Hunter Bell (No. 9) but then rallied off five-straight wins to earn a third-place finish and 12 points.

Donnie Beyer, Jr., a freshman from Cleveland, Tenn., competed at 157 and placed fourth with 9.5 points. Beyer won his first two matches with a pin over Lovaugh Samuels in 3:45 and 16-10 decision over Pierce Erhardt from Huntingdon College but then Tucker Russo from Reinhardt took down Beye with a 5-2 decision.

Now in the consolation semifinal match, Beyer earned another pin over Bobby Ehman from Cumberlands to set up the third-place match. Taking on Brady Emerson, Beyer lost via a 7-4 decision.

Michael Beets has been on a tear of late and had to rally out of the consolation bracket this weekend as well. Beets, a sophomore from Louisville's St. Xavier High School, lost his first match to Reinhardt's Jonathan Ragsdale (11-9) but then won four consecutive matches. Beets took down Kendall Byrd from Reinhardt (10-3), Jakree Garrison from Truett-McConnell (Fall 5:41), John Hernandez (6-3) and Wade Thomas from Huntingdown (Maj. 9-1). Setting up the consolation semifinal match with Life's Jacob Britt, Beets lost 7-2 and earned five team points.
