FORT WAYNE, Ind. —
Adrian Camposano and
Chuck Sharon were able to knock off top-ranked wrestlers in their weight classes at the NWCA National Duals but No. 13 Campbellsville was unable to dethrone No. 1 Grand View, falling 30-9 in the semifinal.
After picking up a win over No. 8 Missouri Valley, Campbellsville had a big up-hill climb to take down the five-time defending national champion, as Grand View brought in 12 ranked grapplers – six of them at No. 1.
But CU knocked off two of them. The dual started with Camposano earning an 11-7 decision over No. 1 Da'Wayne Robertson. CU started with a 3-0 lead but the Vikings answered with a pair of victories at 133 and 141.
No. 1 Jacob Colon pinned Koltez Radaz in 5:23, while
Jayce Carr lost to No. 2 Josh Wenger, 4-0, respectively.
David Sparks then earned an upset at 149. He defeated No. 3 Walker Marshall with a 7-4 decision bringing the Tigers back to a 9-6 deficit.
The Vikings then scored 12 straight points.
Michael Diemer lost 6-4 to Mason Miller,
L.J. Henderson was pinned in 1:05 by No. 1 Grant Henderson and No. 9
Justin Brown was upset by unranked Dylan Blackford.
With CU trailing 21-6, No. 1 Michael Pixley and No. 3
Chuck Sharon both put their undefeated record on the line today with Sharon coming out on top. Sharon took down the top-ranked grappler with an 8-4 decision.
Unranked Johnathen Dennis (197) and No. 1 Dean Broghammer (285) earned the final nine points for Grand View. Dennis defeated CU's
Tyler Rowland with a pin in 5:59 and Broghammer won via 3-0 over
Terrell Moore.
Campbellsville will now have its third dual on Day 1 of the NWCA National Duals at 5 p.m. and will take on the winner of No. 11 Wayland Baptist and Lindenwood-Belleville, which is receiving votes and a member of the Mid-South Conference.
If the Tigers pull out a win in that dual, CU will then compete again on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 a.m. on Mat 6 for a chance to finish fifth at the National Duals.
