FORT WAYNE, Ind. — In the opening dual of the day at the National Wrestling Coaches' Association Multi-Divisional duals, Campbellsville earned sweet revenge over Missouri Valley College, 28-16.
After a 21-17 loss to the Vikings last year in the national duals, the Tigers earned six of the 10 wins today to advance this afternoon. CU faces No. 1 Grand View at 1 p.m. ET and fans can follow along at the link above and also on Twitter @CvilleTigers for in-match updates.
Campbellsville 28, Missouri Valley 16
Adrian Camposano (125) and
Aaron Rugnao (133) got the Tigers off to solid starts against the Vikings. Camposano pinned Eric Arias in 2:25 and Rugnao earned a sudden victory in overtime over Zach Durbin, 3-1.
Jayce Carr (141) and No. 5
Jaedin Sklapsky (149) also earned victories in their first match of the duals. Carr earned a forfeit victory and gave CU six points, while Sklapsky defeated No. 15 Chase Krutzky 5-3.
Leading 18-0 after four matches, Missouri Valley started to make a little noise. The Vikings earned three straight victories. No. 4 Tobias Barnes won 4-3 over Donnie Beyer at 157, while No. 6 Andrew Simmons picked up a major decision, 13-4, over LJ Henderson at 165 and Dalton Tipton, who ranks No. 7 at 165, bumped up a weight class to 174 and took down No. 9
Justin Brown, 7-4.
With the dual score back to 18-10, All-American
Chuck Sharon put an end to any hopes the Vikings had to completing their comeback. Sharon, who entered the duals ranked No. 3 at 184, earned a 15-3 major decision over No. 14 Nicholas Whitehead before
Tyler Rowland picked up six team points with a forfeit at 197.
With the dual in hand, Missouri Valley's 16
th-ranked Justin Smith pinned CU's
Nate Jackson in 4:08.
The loser of the Campbellsville-Grand View dual will wrestle once again at 5 p.m. ET tonight versus the winner of No. 11 Wayland Baptist and Lindenwood-Belleville.
