FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Tiger wrestling kept its hopes alive for its fourth fifth place finish at the NWCA National Duals with a dominating 44-3 victory over No. 11 Wayland Baptist University.
The 13
th-ranked Tigers lost only one match – at 197 lbs. – but won the other nine with three of those coming via pins.
No. 3
Adrian Camposano (125) kept his win streak alive in the Duals with an 8-4 victory over Adelfo Valdez. He was followed with a 9-1 major decision by
Aaron Rugnao (133) over Virley Session to give CU a 7-0 lead.
Then it was three straight pins that set the tone with how the rest of the dual would go.
Jayce Carr (141),
David Sparks (149) and Donnie Beyer (157) all earned pins and scored six points a piece. The win for Sparks was over the 14
th-ranked grappler at 133 lbs., Damarea Speller, who was wrestling up a weight class this week.
Leading now 25-zip,
L.J. Henderson (165) earned another six points with a forfeit victory,
Justin Brown won 9-3 over Drake Lovvorn and
Chuck Sharon scored six points with another forfeit.
No. 8 Riley Williams earned the lone win for Wayland Baptist by defeating
Tyler Rowland, 10-7. But
Nate Jackson earned a 14-3 major decision over Nik Gates to register four points and push CU's win to 44-3.
The Tigers will now wrestle No. 7 Southern Oregon on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 a.m. ET for their fourth fifth-place finish at the NWCA National Duals.
CU ends Day 1 of the NWCA Duals with a 2-1 record. CU defeated Missouri Valley, 28-16, lost to No. 1 Grand View, 30-9, and defeated No. 11 Wayland Baptist 44-3
