Tiger Hoops travels to UPIKE for pair of MSC Contests on Saturday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After playing a full month of non-conference matchups, Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball have arguably their toughest stretch of games coming up in the Mid-South Conference.

Campbellsville basketball travels to the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center on Saturday, Jan. 7 to face the University of Pikeville Bears. The Lady Tigers tip at 2 p.m., while the Tigers will follow at 4 p.m. Both games will air on the Campbellsville University Sports Network with Jordan Alves on the radio call.

Both the men's and women's basketball programs are starting a stretch of five games in 10 days. CU will also play doubleheaders on Monday, Jan. 9, Thursday, Jan. 12, Saturday, Jan. 14 and Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Women's Preview: Campbellsville (14-2, 1-1 MSC) vs. Pikeville (12-4, 1-1 MSC)

Coming off a three-game sweep in the Miami-Doral Hotels Classic, Lady Tiger basketball dropped one spot to No. 7 in the Coaches' Poll. Campbellsville enters with a season-high seven game win streak, while No. 23 Pikeville has won two straight games.

CU and UPIKE both played in the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge. The Lady Tigers swept the Challenge with a perfect 3-0 record, while the Bears went 2-1 – their lone loss came to University of Mobile on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, 73-72.

The two programs have met on the hardwood 74 times in history, with the Lady Tigers leading the series 66-8. The very first meeting came in 1979 with CU defeating then-Pikeville College, 75-58.

Head coach Ginger Colvin boasts a 16-1 overall record against UPIKE and is 9-1 while playing in the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center. Colvin held a 15-0 record against the Bears until Pikeville ended that streak on Feb. 12, 2015 with a 74-71 win over CU.

In the Colvin era, CU is averaging 89.5 points per game in the 16 matchups, while Pikeville is scoring at a 65.2 point per game clip.

The Lady Tigers will be without point guard LeeAnn Grider after she went down with a knee injury vs. Purdue Northwest on Dec. 28. But junior Lauren Turner has picked up the slack nicely the previous three games. Turner dished out a career-high eight assists against Purdue Northwest and then one-upped that high with nine dimes against Johnson and Wales on Dec. 30. In addition, freshman Caitlin Hall played in three games at the Miami-Doral Hotels Classic and finished with a career-high eight points vs. Thomas University after draining a pair of 3s.

Jordan Doram has settled in nicely over the last month. Doram scored a career-high 21 points vs. Johnson and Wales in the Lady Tigers' previous game and has scored in double-figures in the last three.

Senior Emily Fox and junior Madison Clements have also lit a flame to the nets as of late. Fox has scored in double figures the previous five games with game-highs of 20 and 21 points in the MSC/SSAC Challenge. She ranks No. 3 in total 3s (47) and No. 17 in scoring (229 points).

Clements averages 14 points per game and dropped her third 20-point game of the season vs. Purdue Northwest with four 3-point baskets.

Pikeville is led by Devin Conley (16.4 ppg) and Kelah Eldridge (14.5 ppg). Conley ranks No. 1 in the MSC with 48 3-point baskets and 3.4 triples per game. Eldridge is right behind her by hitting 47 percent from deep and No. 3 with 44 triples made and hitting 2.7 3s per game.

Men's Preview: Campbellsville (9-5, 1-1 MSC) vs. Pikeville (14-3, 1-2 MSC)

Pikeville enters ranked No. 13 in the NAIA Poll and boasts a three game win streak. Pikeville started the MSC schedule with a 69-61 win over Shawnee State but has lost two consecutive games to Georgetown College (69-59) and Life University (70-59).

Campbellsville has won two straight non-conference games and split its MSC schedule in the first semester. The Tigers lost to Cumberland University (71-69) before taking down Lindsey Wilson College (64-58).

The two programs are meeting for the 108th time in history, with UPIKE leading the series 61-47. The very first meeting came on Nov. 14, 1964 and with then-Pikeville College winning 79-71 in overtime.

Since the College switched to University status in 2011, Campbellsville has not defeated the Bears at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center. The last win for CU at UPIKE came on Feb. 11, 2010 with a 74-58 victory. That matchup was also the last time CU and UPIKE played while being ranked in the Top 10.

The Expo Center does have a special place in the Tiger program, as CU won its first MSC Tournament championship in 2006. Since it's opening in 2005, CU has a 9-10 record at UPIKE and is 4-8 against the Bears at the Expo Center.

The Tigers are led by sophomore Hagen Tyler's 14 points and senior Elliott Young's 11.8 points per game. Tyler has hit multiple 3s in every game but one and ranks No. 19 in the NAIA with 37 made triples. Young is coming off his first double-double of the season after scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Coach Brent Vernon and staff will be without Kelton Ford for the rest of the season after a pair of injuries halted his senior season.
