ADA, Ohio – Campbellsville's men's wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday and placed third at the Ohio Northern University Invitational after racking up 136.5 team points.
The Tigers had
Kolten Radaz,
Jaedin Sklapsky,
Justin Brown and
Chuck Sharon win their respective weight class. In the team standings Tiffin University won event with 151 points, followed by host Ohio Northern with 140 points.
Radaz went a perfect 4-0 at 133 pounds to win the bracket. He first defeated Adrian College's Chase Beecher in a 9-2 decision and then won a 16-3 major decision over Ohio Northern's Derek Dolph. In the semifinals, Radaz edged Giuseppe Penzone of Tiffin in a 5-4 contest. Radaz capped of his day with a 10-4 decision win over Santino Disabato of Otterbein University in the final.
Sklapsky won his second-straight tournament after winning his four bouts at 149 pounds on Saturday. Sklapsky first pinned Alma College's Jacob Anderson 1:48 into the match. He then captured a 12-3 major decision over Ohio Northern's Jeff Andrews and moved into the final with 9-5 win over Drew Mandell of Olivet College. Sklapsky won his championship bout with a 5-3 decision over Heidelberg University's Hayden Bates.
In the 174-pound weight class, Brown earned four victories allowing a combined 10 points. He first edged Austin Fox of Alma in a 7-4 decision and won a 10-1 major decision against Jeremiah Slagle of Heidelberg. In a low scoring 2-1 bout, Brown held off Clayton Davis of Ohio Northern. Brown was in his second-straight one-point match, where he took down Brandon LeFore of Washington & Lee University, 5-4.
Sharon rounded out the Campbellsville victors with two pins in four matches. He did not make it past the first period in his first two matches after pinning his first two opponents in under 1:45. In the tournament semifinals, Sharon won an 8-1 decision over Olivet's Ryan Clark. The senior then defeated Hayden Bronne of Tiffin in the final in a 9-4 affair to win the 184-pound weight class.
David Sparks placed fourth overall at 157 pounds for Campbellsville. Sparks was on a roll with back-to-back pins to start the event. However, in his third match of the day, he suffered a 15-0 setback in a technical loss to Shane Conner from Washington & Lee. Sparks rebounded once again and pinned Denver Aydellott of Otterbein and Chris White from Heidelberg. Sparks moved into the third-place match after winning via forfeit and did not go the distance in any of his matches until the third-place bout, where he dropped a 6-2 decision to Tiffin's Beau Minnick.
At 125 pounds,
Michael Beets went 1-2 and started with a 10-6 decision win over Austin Wieczorek of Alma, but then lost an 11-2 contest to Trine University's Breden Stevens. Beets then injury defaulted in his next match to end the day.
Tombola Sindihebura wrestled at 141 pounds for the Tigers and earned a 5-2 decision against Aidan Pierobon of Ohio Northern to start the day. Sindihebura was edged in overtime on the first tiebreaker and lost 10-9. The close contests continued to roll for Sindihebura as he won a 3-2 decision in the consolation bracket, however, another overtime lost ended his day losing a 9-7 sudden victory contest to Zach Bylykbashi of Washington & Lee.
Christian Shelby went 2-2 at 149 pounds dropping his first bout of the day to Cole Hersch of Olivet, 13-4, in a major decision. After moving over to the consultation rounds, Shelby won a major decision over Antonio Raona of Adrian and then pinned Efrain Amezquita of Trine. Shelby's run through the consolation bracket was halted with a 9-1 major decision loss to Adrian's Noah Nieman.
Campbellsville had
Jacob Franklin and
Tristan Palmer compete at 197 pounds. Franklin battled to a sixth-place finish after going 3-3. He lost his first match of the day to Otterbein's Drew Kasper, 6-1, which was Kasper's closest match of the day en route to winning the weight class. Franklin then won three-straight matches to stay alive in the consolation rounds winning by a major decision and then two-straight decision wins.
Franklin was pushed in the fifth-place match after falling 8-2 to Anthony Neal of Trine. In the fifth-place bout, Franklin lost an 8-1 decision to Chase Morrison of Heidelberg.
Palmer went 0-2 at 197 pounds after being pinned late in his first match against Tyler Hammack of Heidelberg and was then edged in a 5-4 decision by Olivet's Jack Tromp.
Hunter Hancock rounded out the Campbellsville wrestlers in the field on Saturday placing seventh at 285 pounds. He suffered a 3-0 decision lost to David Henson out of Tiffin to start the day. However, Hancock rebounded with a 6-2 win over Otterbein's Alex Scotton and then a 10-5 win against Bradley Gierman of Olivet. Hancock was then pinned 39 seconds into the match against Caleb Fry of Tiffin and Hancock finished seventh overall after Ohio Northern's Austin Keeley was forced to medically forfeit the seventh-place match.
The Tigers return to action next weekend as it travels to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the Indiana Institute of Technology Warrior Duals on Saturday, Dec. 9.
