FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Campbellsville's men's wrestling team started its head-to-head slate at Indiana Institute of Technology's Warrior Duals, where the Tigers went 2-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Justin Brown and
Chuck Sharon led Campbellsville at the Warrior Duals going a combined 8-0 in the four duals, while Jaedin Skalpsky won all three of his matches.
The Tigers picked up two wins to start the day beating Hannibal-LaGrange University, 37-7, and Davenport University, 28-12. Following its break, Campbellsville dropped a close 23-21 contest to Marian University and then capped off the day with a 31-12 loss to No. 3 Indiana Tech.
Campbellsville 37, Hannibal-LaGrange 7
Following a double forfeit at 125 pounds, the Tigers got rolling with a perfect 24 points through the next four matches.
Kolten Radaz pinned Caleb McElfresh at 133 pounds and
David Sparks pinned Joshua Nidever in the 157-pound bout. Campbellsville went on top 24-0 following forfeit wins at 141 and 149 pounds.
The Trojans got on the board following the 165-pound match after Tramel Harrel edged
Trey Lepper in a 4-1 decision. Brown started his day with a 6-0 decision over Jeremiah Reed (No. 8 at 174 pounds) and Sharon earned a 16-0 min. tech fall over Austin Hawes at 184 pounds. The Tigers stretched its lead to 37-3 after
Jacob Franklin pinned Harry Vessell.
Campbellsville won its first dual of the season 37-7 after
Hunter Hancock suffered a 21-5 min. tech fall to Nigel Burnett (No. 13 at 285 pounds) to cap off the dual.
Campbellsville 28, Davenport 12
In the second dual of the day for the Tigers, they fell behind early after the Panthers earned a forfeit win at 125 pounds. Radaz moved to 2-0 on the day with a 19-6 major decision over Cody Orcutt to pull Campbellsville within two points.
Davenport gained some more breathing room in the team score after Jordan Ringler edged
Tombola Sindihebura in a 6-4 decision. However, with the Panthers leading 9-4, the Tigers countered and won the next six bouts.
Sklapsky pinned his first opponent of the day to give Campbellsville a 10-9 lead, followed by decision wins from Sparks (5-4),
Michael Diemer (8-1) and Brown (10-3). Sharon pinned Kyle Nixon and the Campbellsville run was capped off with Franklin beating Jacob Holmes in a 5-1 decision.
The dual came to a close with Emmanual Haddad taking down Hancock, 7-1, but Campbellsville had the dual locked up and won, 28-12.
Marian 23, Campbellsville 21
In a back-and-forth dual, Marian took a 6-0 lead with a forfeit in the 125-pound match. Radaz picked up his third-straight win to start the day with a 3-0 decision over Christopher Sharp at 133 pounds. Competing for the first time on Saturday,
Jayce Carr tied the match with a 10-5 decision over Levi Moss.
Sklapsky handed the Tigers a 12-6 advantage following his second pin of the day, but Kain Rust halted the Campbellsville run with a narrow 6-5 decision over Diemer at 157 pounds. Brett Johnson (ranked 17th at 165 pounds) put the Knights back on top with a 17-1 technical fall over Lepper.
The duo of Brown and Sharon put the Tigers back ahead by seven points after Brown shutout Ismael Cornejo in a 5-0 contest, while Sharon pinned Charlie Hill (ranked 16th at 184 pounds) to push the Campbellsville lead to 21-14.
Despite leading by seven points with two matches to go, the Tigers saw the lead slip away after Zachary Worm pinned Franklin at 197 pounds and Ethan Bruce defeated Hancock in a 7-3 decision to cap off the dual. With Marian picking up nine points over the final two matches the Knights upset the Tigers, 23-21.
Indiana Tech 31, Campbellsville 12
In a top-15 matchup, Indiana Tech went ahead 12-0 over the first three matches. With a forfeit at 125 pounds, Erique Early (ranked second at 133 pounds) and Gaige Torres (ranked ninth at 141 pounds) ran the Warrior run to 12-straight points.
Early took down Radaz in the 7-3 decision, which handed Radaz his first loss of the day, and Torres upset Carr – who was ranked fifth at 141 pounds – with a 9-5 victory. Sklapsky put an end to the run with a tight 2-1 decision win over Justin Atkinson (ranked eight at 149 pounds).
Thomas Garty (ranked third at 149 pounds) moved up to 157 pounds and defeated Sparks in an 11-8 decision. Indiana Tech went ahead 21-3 after Mitch Roadruck (ranked fourth at 165 pounds) pinned Lepper in the 165-pound match.
Brown got the Tigers back on the board with a 5-2 decision over Scott Sopko (ranked 11th at 174 pounds) and Sharon pinned Chandler Updike. With Campbellsville making the score 21-12 in favor of the Warriors, Indiana Tech's Tyler Moser and Dylan Cain sealed the win for the Warriors. Moser won a 14-4 major decision over Franklin and Cain pinned Hancock en route to Indiana Tech beating the Tigers, 31-12.
Campbellsville returns to action next Sunday at the Smokey Mountain Duals in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
