CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger wrestling sent its 2017 seniors out in style with a win over No. 18 Cumberland University on Friday night, 22-11.
The Tigers finish their regular season duals record to 16-7 overall and 7-2 inside Mid-South Conference play. Campbellsville is now tied with Life University for third place in the standings. Lindsey Wilson and University of Cumberland still have one final MSC dual remaining on their schedule and boast a 7-1 record.
The three Tiger seniors –
Justin Brown,
Terrell Moore and
Shawn McGhee – were recognized after the 157 match and it seemed to spark the Tigers late.
The night started out in the Phoenix' favor, as Sean Nguyen won via major decision over
Michael Beets, 8-0. But
Aaron Rugnao and No. 13
Jayce Carr both earned decisions and
Jaedin Sklapsky earned a major to put the Tigers ahead, 10-4.
At 157, No. 9 Nate Croley earned a major over
Michael Diemer, 13-3, and John Olivieri defeated Donnie Beyer, 8-5, at 165. But the Tigers rallied when it mattered down the stretch.
Trailing 11-10, No. 12 Brown started a rally of four straight match wins to seal the dual. Brown defeated No. 16 Orlando Nawade 7-4 and Campbellsville regained the lead, 13-11. No. 1
Chuck Sharon took down No. 7 Kyle Delaune, 8-4, and was followed with a dual-sealing victory by
Tyler Rowland at 197, 8-4, over Matt Carroll.
At 285, No. 15 Moore put an exclamation point on the dual with a 10-4 victory over Jon Floyd.
Campbellsville, which will defend its 2016 title, will now await its fate and seeding in the Mid-South Conference/NAIA East Qualifier scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 in Bowling Green, Ky.
