Championship bids for Camposano and Sharon come up just short, Tigers finish in third

TOPEKA, Kan. — Coming into tonight, Campbellsville needed a pair of wins to dethrone rival Lindsey Wilson College from second place in the standings but Chuck Sharon and Adrian Camposano came up just short in their bids at becoming national champions.

As a team, the Tigers finished in third place – tying the highest finish in program history which came in the 2012 championship in Des Moines, Iowa.

Grand View continues its domination with its sixth-straight NAIA Championship. The Vikings broke the team points record for a second straight year with 234.5. Lindsey Wilson compiled 74.5 points, and the Tigers finished with 64.5.

Coming into the evening, all of Campbellsville's national champions have come in the lower weight classes and Sharon was looking to end that streak at 184lbs. But Ben Stroh, from Montana State-Northern, held on in the final seconds to claim the title.

Camposano, a senior transfer from Fresno, Calif., is the first 125-pounder competing for a national title since Johnny Papesh in 2011. He lost to Troy Lakin from Menlo College, 15-6.

Both Sharon (27-2) and Camposano (19-2) finish the season with two losses.

Match Recap: Troy Lakin 15, Adrian Camposano 6
Lakin earned the matches first point with a two-point takedown but Camposano cut that deficit in half with an escape at 45 seconds left in the first period.

The second stanza was the difference maker, as Lakin made his moves. Camposano allowed a two-point reversal and two-point takedown with 1:30 left and got behind 6-2. Just a few seconds later, Lakin earned another two-point take down and four nearfall points to lead 13-3.

Camposano was able to muster two escape points in the final period but it was too little too late, falling by major decision, 15-6.

Match Recap: Ben Stroh 6, Chuck Sharon 5
Sharon jumped on the board first with a two-point near side cradle just 54 seconds in the first period. But about one minute later, it was Stroh scoring a two-point reversal and allowing Sharon to escape to put Sharon in the lead, 3-2.

Late in the opening period, Stroh earned a two-point takedown to lead 4-3. After going down to start the second period, Stroh picked up an escape point to lead 5-3 going into the third.

Sharon then started down in the third period and dug deep for a two-point reversal knotting the match at 5-all. But a few seconds after the reversal, Sharon allowed Stroh to escape giving him what ended up being a 6-5 lead and the win.

Sharon tried to light fireworks inside the Kansas Expocentre with 10 seconds left but a two-point takedown came up just short and was ruled out of bounds with one second on the clock.

Zach Flake, Tommy Pretty and Davion Caston remain the three national champions in Campbellsville history. Flake won the first title for CU at 141 in 2007 and was followed by a Pretty (2010) and Caston (2015) titles at 133lbs.
