Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Campbellsville men's tennis flipped a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 victory over rival Lindsey Wilson to claim its first Mid-South Conference Tournament championship at Kereiakis Park late on Monday night.
With the Tigers' winning their first, Lindsey Wilson's run at six straight titles dating back to 2012 is snapped. CU is now one of three teams to claim the tournament championship since 2000. University of Pikeville won in 2001 and 2002, while the Blue Raiders won every other but 2011, when the MSC was a part of an unaffiliated conference group. In addition, CU won the regular season title in 2011.
"I am super proud of our guys," said coach
Kyle Caven. "To win a tournament of this level is just a testament to our guys and their work ethic. We have a great group of guys and they deserve this moment."
The ninth-ranked Tigers (19-3) went up 2-1 after doubles but No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (16-6) won the first three singles matches to lead, 4-2.
In what was a back-and-forth affair, the Tigers led early, faltered in the middle matches, but eventually stole the title out of the grasps of Lindsey Wilson.
Brendan Aguilar and
Victor Ahlbeck put the Tigers ahead 1-0 after defeating Ivan Solans Diaz and Tomas Depiaggio 8-3 at the second-seeded doubled match. Denis Porcic and Alonso Tellez leveled things up with an 8-4 victory over
Alejandro Reyes and
Chrys Castro at the top flight. Campbellsville went back out front after winning the third doubles match 8-6 as
Adrian Sabrojo and
Mario Belloni defeated Javier Raya and Filip Persson to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The Blue Raiders quickly took back control of the match after winning the next three points and coming within a single point of clinching the title.
Porcic (ranked No. 3 in NAIA singles) defeated No. 5-ranked Aguilar in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, at the top singles matchup to even the match at 2-2. Raya put LWC ahead for the first time with a 6-3, 6-4 win over
Mario Belloni at the No. 5 match. Solans Diaz then made it 4-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Reyes at the second flight.
Chrys Castro then started the Tigers' rally by winning at No. 6 singles over Cobi Ho, 6-3, 6-4.
Then fireworks started to ignite on two courts - Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Victor Alhbeck defeated Alonso Tellez, 6-7, 6-1, 5-1 (default) to tie that match at four-all. Alhbeck ended up winning after three calls were overturned, language outbursts and code violations by Tellez. That outburst gave the Tigers all the momentum and
Adrian Sabrojo took care of business at No. 3 singles.
With the match now tied at four, Sabrojo won 6-4, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2 as the Tigers stormed the court for the victory.
The tournament championship is the first for Campbellsville men's tennis in program history and the Tigers will now earn the Mid-South Conference's automatic bid. The national qualifiers will be released on Saturday, May 6 by the national office.
