CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 16th-ranked Campbellsville men's soccer team begins its 2017 season on Saturday afternoon against Trinity International in Deerfield, Illinois starting at 3 p.m. ET.
The Tigers are coming off of a 2016 campaign where they went 16-2-3 overall and won a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title. Campbellsville also won the conference tournament title last season after beating Lindsey Wilson College on penalty kicks, 5-3.
Entering the season, the Tigers have 10 players returning from its squad last season, highlighted by First Team All Mid-South Conference performers in
Nathan Heath,
Daniel Nimmo and
Ignacio Mangada. Heath and Nimmo anchored the backline for Campbellsville last season as the Tigers finished second in the NAIA with 15 shutouts.
Mangada led Campbellsville a year ago with 13 goals during his freshman season. He was the lone Tiger to scored at least 10 goals last season and also earned MSC Freshman of the Year honors.
Head coach
Adam Preston has a fairly young club this season with 11 freshmen on the roster. Campbellsville only has four juniors on the team and there are no seniors on the squad.
Trinity International has two games under its belt and it has started the season 0-2-0. The Trojans first suffered a 4-1 loss at home to No. 14 Spring Arbor University, followed by a 4-0 loss against Lawrence Tech University earlier this week.
The lone goal for Trinity International came in the ninth minute of its season opener against Spring Arbor, where Francesco De Felice converted on a penalty kick for the Trojans. Over its first two games, Trinity International has recorded just 10 shots – five in each game – and three on goal. All three shots on goal for the Trojans came against Spring Arbor.
Trinity International posted an overall record of 7-10-2 during the 2016 season.
Last year when the Tigers faced Trinity International, Campbellsville picked up a 4-0 victory at home. Heath highlighted the game scoring two goals in contest, while
Rickard Hallin and former Tiger
Marco Galeano each recorded a goal against the Trojans.
Campbellsville had 32 to shots in its game against Trinity International last year, including 12 that were on target.
Kickoff between Tigers and the Trojans is slated for 3 p.m. ET from Deerfield, Ill.
