CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 11th-ranked Campbellsville men's wrestling team went 1-1 during it first two Mid-South Conference duals of the year. The Tigers lost to No. 4 University of the Cumberlands, 31-3, but beat Brewton-Parker College, 41-6.
Campbellsville (7-6, 1-1 MSC) was led by
Justin Brown who was the lone individual to pick up two wins on Saturday afternoon.
Cumberlands 31, Campbellsville 3
In a dual that started with the 149-pound bout, Cumberlands picked up three-straight wins to jump out to an early 10-0 lead. Tres Leon (ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds) beat
David Sparks in a 15-5 major decision, and then
Calieb Ray dropped a 10-4 contest to Bobby Ehman. Tristan Macri put the Patriots (9-1, 2-0 MSC) on top 10-0 after beating
L.J. Henderson, 7-4.
Brown (ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds) put an end to the Cumberlands run with a narrow 3-2 decision over Hunter Bell (ranked 18th at 174 pounds).
Chuck Sharon (ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds) fell behind early in his match, but rallied to tie the score at 10 to force overtime. However, in the first sudden victory period, Cameron Jones (ranked fourth at 184 pounds) picked up an early takedown and upset Sharon in a 12-10 SV-1 contest. The loss for Sharon was his first against an NAIA opponent this season.
Cumberlands continued roll and won the final six matches of the dual to earn the win. Eric Deluse (No. 11 at 197 pounds) beat
Jacob Franklin in an 8-0 major decision and then Quandre Chisolm (ranked sixth at 285 pounds) edged
Nate Jackson in a 5-4 match.
Circling back to the 125-pound weight class Hayden Lee (No. 1 at 125 pounds) beat
Jordan Martinez, 12-2, followed by Jake Sinkovics (No. 1 at 133 pounds) earning the Patriots second-straight major decision with a 9-1 win over
Kolten Radaz. The dual came to a close with Trent Leon upsetting
Jayce Carr (ranked eighth at 141 pounds) in a tight 4-3 decision to give Cumberlands the 31-3 victory.
Campbellsville 41, Brewton-Parker 6
The Tigers turned the tables in its second dual of the day against the Barons (0-6, 0-2 MSC) winning eight of the 10 matches. Starting at 149 pounds, Sparks edged Dean Esquibel in a 4-2 decision to start Campbellsville's run of six-straight wins.
Ray pinned Luke Anderson just 36 seconds into the 157-pound match and after Brewton-Parker forfeited the 165- and 174-pound matches, Sharon rebounded from his earlier loss with an 18-1 technical fall over Jeffery Pinkney to put the Tigers ahead, 26-0. Franklin extended the Campbellsville lead to 32 points after he pinned Daniel Anderson in 1:03.
Jose Carrillo-Garcia got Brewton-Parker its first win of the dual in a 5-1 decision over
Hunter Hancock. Martinez got the Tigers back on the winning track with a 5-0 win over Christopher Houston.
To close out the dual, Manny Henderson defeated Radaz by a narrow 9-7 margin and Carr won via forfeit at 141 pounds to finish the day en route the 41-6 win over the Barons.
Campbellsville is back in action next weekend at the Missouri Valley College Invitational in Marshall, Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
