MARSHALL, Mo. – Jaedin Sklapsky returned to action this weekend and went 5-0 en route to winning the 141-pound weight class at the Missouri Valley College Invitational, where the Campbellsville's men's wrestling team placed 10th overall with 71 points.
Sklapsky now sits at 18-0 this year after picking five wins this weekend.
David Sparks and
Aaron Rugnao also placed for the Tigers, where Sparks finished sixth overall in the 149-pound weight division and Rugnao was seventh at 133 pounds during his first competition of the season.
Sklapsky capped of his unbeaten weekend with two more wins on Saturday to win the 141-pound weight class. He started the day with an 8-4 decision over Midland University's Daniel Berger – who is the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds.
In the championship match of the weight class, Sklapsky beat John Bindner (ranked No. 14 at 141 pounds) of host Missouri Valley.
Sparks had a strong start to the day with back-to-back pins to move into the semifinals of the 149-pound consolation bracket. Sparks first pinned Missouri Valley's Calloway Morphis and then picked up his second pin of the day over Zac Funderburk from Briar Cliff University. Sparks' run was halted by Oklahoma City University's Matt Landgraff (ranked seventh at 149 pounds) in a 12-1 major decision. Sparks was pushed into the fifth-place match where he suffered a 7-4 decision loss against Maryville University's Michael Peters and placed sixth overall.
After pinning his final opponent on Friday to earn on spot in the second day of the tournament,
Aaron Rugnao picked up two wins on Saturday in the 133-pound weight class. Rugnao first earned a 10-6 decision over William Baptist College's Nate Souder. He stayed alive in the tournament after William Baptist's Tanner Irwin (ranked No. 5 at 133 pounds) forfeited his next match. Rugnao was pushed into the seventh-place match after dropping a 5-3 decision to Landon Bailey of Montana Sate University-Northern. In his final match of the day, Rugnao earned a 19-4 technical fall for the Tigers and beat Northwestern's Jacob Hergott fo finish overall in the his action of the season.
Michael Beets was eliminated from the 125-pound consolation bracket in the first match of the day after he dropped a 4-0 decision to Midland's Julian Gaytan. Beets finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark.
In the 149-pound consolation bracket,
Michael Diemer lost his first bout on Saturday to Menlo College's Jeffrey Uyesaka, 3-1, to end his tournament.
L.J. Henderson dropped two-straight matches after ending the first day of competition with a loss. Henderson was shutout in a 7-0 decision against Briar Cliff's Chris Paulsen at 165 pounds.
Second-ranked and host Missouri Valley won the tournament with 157 points, while No. 1 Grand View University finished second with 146 points. Menlo rounded out the top three with 131.5 points and Lindsey Wilson College was the highest finishing Mid-South Conference team in the field with 124.5 points to place fourth.
Campbellsville returns to dual meet action on Thursday night for its only home event of the season against No. 8 Southeastern University at 7 p.m. ET.
