FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In a battle of a pair of team's ranked 11th in the NAIA, Lindsey Wilson College edged Campbellsville, 21-15, to start the NWCA-NAIA National Duals at the War Memorial Coliseum on Thursday morning.
The Tigers (4-3) picked up four wins in the dual with
Jordan Martinez,
Tombola Sindihebura,
Justin Brown and
Chuck Sharon capturing the victories against the Blue Raiders (4-0).
Martinez started the dual with a 6-2 decision over Michael Sergent in the 125-pound weight class, which put Campbellsville on top in the early going. Lindsey Wilson then flipped the script at 133 pounds after Brady Moser (ranked 12th at 133 pounds) pinned
Kolten Radaz 1:27 into the match to give the Blue Raiders the three-point advantage.
Sindihebura countered Lindsey Wilson's pin with a pin of his own at 141 pounds. In the second period, Sindihebura was able pin Dante Castellano.
The Blue Raiders then followed up three-straight victories to regain the lead and take its largest lead of the dual at six points. Mark Taijeron edged
David Sparks at 149 pounds, 8-7, and then Bryce Hoffman beat
Michael Diemer, 6-4. In the 165-pound bout, Diorian Coleman (ranked fifth at 165 pounds) took down
L.J. Henderson, 5-1, which gave Lindsey Wilson a 15-9 lead over the Tigers.
Campbellsville's duo of Brown and Sharon brought the dual back to a stalemate. In a battle of two top-five wrestlers at 174 pounds that went into overtime, Brown (ranked second) and Colton Gonzalez (ranked No. 5) battled to a 3-3 contest. Brown picked up the decision victory after holding a narrow edge in ride time during overtime.
Sharon (ranked first at 184 pounds) tied the dual at 15 all, following a 5-1 decision over Kohl Dodd.
With the dual tied, Avery Buckman and
Jacob Franklin faced off in the 197-pound contest. After the seven minutes of regulation ran out, Buckman and Franklin were tied at three. Buckman won the dual in the first overtime after a takedown to earn a 5-3 sudden victory.
In the last match of the dual,
Nate Jackson faced off against Raynel Brown (ranked No. 17 at 285 pounds), where Jackson needed a victory to keep Campbellsville alive. However, Brown beat Jackson in the bout, 8-2, to seal a 21-15 victory for Lindsey Wilson.
The Tigers now slip into the elimination bracket, where they will face William Penn University at 1 p.m. ET from the War Memorial Coliseum. The Statesman lost their opening dual to No. 1 Grand View University, 49-4.
