FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 11th-ranked Campbellsville men's wrestling team dropped a top-15 contest against No. 3 Indiana Institute of Technology, 26-11, to start the second day of the NWCA-NAIA National Duals at the War Memorial Coliseum.
The Tigers (6-4) cut into its 13-point deficit to pull within six points of the Warriors (8-4), but Indiana Tech pulled away late to secure the victory. The loss sends Campbellsville into the seventh-place match at 2 p.m. ET against No. 14 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The Warriors started the dual winning the first four matches to jump out a 13-0 lead. Sawyer Miller (ranked No. 2 at 125 pounds) picked up a 10-4 decision over
Jordan Martinez, followed by Erique Early (ranked second at 133 pounds) winning by major decision, 14-3, over
Kolten Radaz.
A top 10 matchup went to Indiana Tech to continue the run. At 141 pounds,
Jayce Carr (No. 8 at 141 pounds) was edged by Gaige Torres (No. 5 at 141 pounds) in a 3-1 decision. In the 149-pound match
David Sparks was unable to rally against Justin Atkinson (ranked 12th at 149 pounds) after losing a 5-2 decision.
Michael Diemer stopped the run for the Warriors and put Campbellsville on the board with a 5-0 decision over Jon Watkins. Mitch Roadruck (ranked seventh at 165 pounds) put Indiana Tech back on track in the 165-pound match after beating
L.J. Henderson in an 11-1 major decision.
At 174 pounds,
Justin Brown (ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds) picked up his third victory over a top 10 opponent after a 5-3 decision over Scott Sopko (ranked sixth at 174 pounds) to cut the Tiger deficit to 17-6.
Chuck Sharon (No. 1 at 184 pounds) had a top 15 foe on tap in Zach Davis – who is ranked No. 12 at 184 pounds. However, Sharon rolled to the victory earning a 16-0 technical fall for Campbellsville pulling it within six with two matches to go.
In the 197-pound bout,
Jacob Franklin and Tyler Moser competed tight throughout. Trailing 2-1 late in the third period, Franklin had riding time bonus point on his side, but a late two-points from Moser flipped the script and seal the victory for Indiana Tech. Moser earned a 4-1 decision for the Warriors.
With the match in hand, Dylan Cain pinned
Nate Jackson in the 285-pound match to give Indiana Tech a 26-11 victory.
Campbellsville now slips into the seventh-place match and faces Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon.
