No. 11 Men’s Wrestling places eighth at national duals after 22-15 loss to No. 14 Embry-Riddle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Campbellsville's men's wrestling team wrapped up the NWCA-NAIA National Duals with a 22-15 loss to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the seventh-place match of the national duals at War Memorial Coliseum.

The 11th-ranked Tigers (6-5) won the first three matches of the dual, but the 14th-ranked Eagles (6-8) won five of the final seven contests to pick up the victory.

After a slow start earlier in the day, Campbellsville turned the script in its second dual of the day with nine quick points out of the gate. Jordan Martinez began the dual with an upset of Chandler Strand (ranked seventh at 125 pounds) in a 3-1 SV-1 contest.

Upsets continued to roll for the Tigers with Kolten Radaz notching an 8-4 decision win over Collin Anderson (ranked 14th at 133 pounds) in the 133-pound weight class. Jayce Carr (ranked eighth at 141 pounds) avoided the upset and took down Cameron Huizar (ranked 17th at 141 pounds) in a narrow 5-3 contest.

Embry-Riddle got on the board in the 149-pound bout with David Salazar picking up a 10-6 decision over David Sparks. James Williams (ranked fourth at 157 pounds) then brought the Eagles within two points after a 9-0 major decision over Michael Diemer at 157 pounds.

In the 165-pound match, Embry-Riddle took its first lead of the day after Taylor Owens (ranked No. 16 at 165 pounds) edged L.J. Henderson, 8-5. The Eagle lead did not last long following a 4-3 decision from Justin Brown (ranked second at 174 pounds) over Kody Davis (No. 10 at 1874 pounds. To finish the week, Brown defeated four top 10 opponents and went unbeaten at the national duals.

Chuck Sharon (ranked first at 184 pounds) increased the Tiger lead to 15-10 with a 6-1 decision against Payton Mair.

Campbellsville's lead slipped away late after Embry-Riddle won the final two matches of the dual via pins. Elias Mason (ranked 13th at 197 pounds) pinned Jacob Franklin 26 seconds into the match and David Rupp pinned Nate Jackson early in the second period. The two pins boosted the Eagles from behind to pick up a 22-15 victory.

This is the ninth time the Tigers have placed in national duals over the last 10 seasons. However, the eight-place finish snaps Campbellsville's string of seven-straight duals finishing in the top five.

The Tigers return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a pair of the Mid-South Conference duals against No. 4 University of the Cumberlands and Brewton-Parker College in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
