Rogers lights it up with career-high 18 points in Lady Tiger Basketball's opening win

McKENZIE, Tenn. – Sophomore southpaw Sammy Rogers scored a career-high 18 points and dished out four assists off the bench in Campbellsville's opening win over Brescia University, 109-76.

Rogers came off the bench and played 20 minutes to hit 6-of-7 from the floor including two Edward Jones 3-point baskets to lead the Lady Tigers. Savannah Gregory also matched a career-high with eight steals and dropped 17.

CU starts the season 1-0 and is 9-0 all-time in the Chamber Classic at Bethel University's Crisp Arena.

All 14 Lady Tigers that were dressed saw at least eight minutes and all scored. The one that played the least - senior leader Jordan Doram as she was hampered with foul trouble all night, scoring only four points and grabbing two boards in 8:22.

But the depth came in clutch tonight as the bench scored 71 points and CU's post-play dropped 79 of the 109 points in the paint.

It was a slow start offensively as the Lady Tigers didn't score until Madison Stewart's layup, off one of the 41 turnovers the Lady Tigers forced, at the 7:45 mark of the opening frame.

The defense was the catalyst that led to offense as the 41 forced turnovers surpasses last year's season-high by – which was also in the opener of the Chamber Classic against Blue Mountain (36).

But once Stewart scored the first deuce, the route was on. Cristin Hall drained the first Edward Jones triple on the next CU possession to put CU ahead, 5-4. Brescia battled early on but an 8-1 run to end the opening quarter gave the Lady Tigers a 30-21 lead.

The first half ended with CU breaking another mark from last season – the most points in a half with 64. Last season CU dropped 61 on Simmons College on Nov. 28 for their season-high in a half.

After the first half, Gregory led CU with 13 points, while Madison Faulkner came off the bench to score 10. But it was the Sammy Rogers show the rest of the way. Rogers saw a bulk of the playing time at the two-guard after Cristin Hall went down with a left-knee injury as Coach Ginger High Colvin speculated and hoped it was just a hyperextension on the post-game show.

Rogers came in at 9:24 mark of the third quarter and went to work. She made a pair of free throws and hit a triple to score five-straight for CU and push the Lady Tigers ahead, 82-59. At one point, she scored eight of the 12 points as CU took a 94-62 lead with 6:29 left in the game.

In addition to Rogers and Gregory, three others scored in double figures. Faulkner finished with 14 points and seven boards, while Faith Lake had a stellar debut with 11 points. Lake scored back-to-back buckets off the bench in the second quarter – one of those on an in-bounds play with two seconds remaining on the shot clock.

Alexus Calhoun also came off the bench to hit double figures with 10 points as well.

Stewart led the way with eight boards. The Lady Tigers were being out-rebounded in the first half, 17-14, but CU battled in the final 20 minutes to hold Brescia to only 13 second-half rebounds. Campbellsville ended the night out-rebounding the Bearcats, 40-30.

Campbellsville will now have a quick turnaround as the Lady Tigers face Hiwassee College tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. ET. The Pregame Show begins at 2:45 on the CU Sports Network – www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.
