No. 18 Southeastern hands No. 14 Tiger wrestling its first dual loss of the season

LAKELAND, Fla. — Tiger wrestling had a quick start out of the gates but No. 18 Southeastern picked won four-straight matches, and seven out of the final eight, to seal an upset victory, 27-12.

The 14th-ranked Tigers (1-1) were wrestling their second-straight dual in as many as days and started with a quick 9-0 lead. No. 5 Jordan Martinez gave Campbellsville a 3-0 advantage with a 9-3 decision over Jaaziel Santana and then Marvin Galette pinned Edward Barratt in 3:37 giving CU the 9-0 lead.

But then it was four straight wins, including a forfeit at 149 lbs., to give Southeastern (1-2) big-time momentum.

No. 6 Ethan Owen got the Fire going with an 11-2 major decision over Aaron Rugnao and then the forfeit at 149 depleted that early Campbellsville lead, 10-9.

At 157 lbs. Kyle Kirkham earned a 6-3 decision over Gavin Smith to extend SEU's lead, 13-9. Then the fourth-straight match was sealed by No. 5 Dylan Chatterton at 165 lbs. He took down Raymond Williams with a 12-3 major decision.

Now trailing 17-9, Mahlic Sallah got the Tigers back in the win column but it was the only CU victory in seven matched. Sallah took down Carlos Diaz, 9-5, before Southeastern won the final three matches at 184, 197 and 285.

Aaron Mosley lost to No. 18 Jason Davis, 8-4, Kevin Schantz fell 13-4 to Jesse Pryor and Ashton Mutuwa lost 3-2 to Silas Root.

The Fire win their first dual of the year after falling to Marian University, 24-20, and No. 10 Williams Baptist, 21-18, last week.

Campbellsville's record goes to 1-1 in the early dual season. The Tigers will now compete in the Georgia Open in Franklin Springs, Ga. on Saturday to complete a busy week.
