Lady Tigers use depth to run past Eagles; Faulkner records first-career double-double

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Faulkner University is thinking that Madison Faulkner missed her calling when picking schools but Campbellsville sure is glad she's a Lady Tiger. Today, Faulkner tallied her first-career double-double en route to a 95-53 win for Campbellsville.

The Lady Tigers go 2-0 on the road swing in Alabama after Christmas and improve their record to 14-2 – which is the just the fourth time in head coach Ginger High Colvin's tenure CU has registered 14 or more wins in the first-half of the season.

Madison Faulkner led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first-career double-double. With the trio of her, Jordan Doram and Alexus Calhoun, the Lady Tigers stuck to their scouting report and ran Faulkner University's Lauren Grant up and down the court in the first half.

Grant, a 6-foot-3 freshman for Faulkner, came in averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds but did not tally a point or board in the first half. She did finish with seven points and five boards in the second 20 minutes, though.

The Lady Tigers used their depth in a big way, turning the Eagles over 31 times and scoring 40 points off those miscues.

In addition to Faulkner, two other Madisons scored in double figures. Madison Stewart had 13 points while Madison Kaiser finished with 11. Doram just missed double figures with nine, while Caitlin Hall scored eight.

In the first quarter, it was a big run for Campbellsville two minutes into the game. The Eagles led 5-2 after Ashlyn Adkins scored the first five points but Campbellsville answered with a haymaker. CU ended the quarter on a 21-5 run and led, 23-10, after the first 10 minutes of action. Also, the Lady Tigers forced Faulkner University to call three first-quarter timeouts – which would haunt them in the second half.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Faulkner, 27-8, to hold the Eagles to their lowest point production in the first half all season and led, 50-18.

In the first half, the Lady Tigers had hit six Edward Jones 3-pointers – two by Hall, one by Kaiser and Stewart and one apiece by the Lexy Lake and Faith Lake.

The Eagles entered today receiving votes in the NAIA Top Poll and have held opponents to hitting 34 percent from the floor but CU blistered the nets by 52 percent from the floor.

The Eagles picked up their offensive production in the second half. After hitting only 28 percent in the first, Faulkner hit 14-of-31 (45 percent) in the final 20 minutes.

The timeout became an issue midway through the fourth quarter, as coach Reed Sutton called what would have been the sixth timeout for the Eagles – which is one more than allowed. Stewart hit a pair of technical free throws to put the icing on the cake and give Faulkner University its worst margin of defeat this year - which was previously 20 points in the second game against MSC foe Life University.

The Lady Tigers now will have four days to prepare for rival Georgetown College. CU travels to GC on Saturday, Jan. 5 with tipoff at 2 p.m. ET. Matt Payton will have the radio call at 1:45 on the CU Sports Network.
