LEBANON, Tenn. – Chuck Sharon recorded his 100th career win at Campbellsville after grabbing two wins and helping the Tigers to a pair of 20-16 dual victories over No. 6 Life University and Cumberland University at the Phoenix Duals on Saturday afternoon.
Campbellsville (9-8, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) earned six wins in each of its duals as it upset the Running Eagles (13-4, 3-3 MSC) to start the day and then defeated the host Phoenix (2-9, 0-5 MSC) to round out action on Saturday.
Campbellsville 20, Life 16
In the opening dual of the day, the Tigers and Running Eagles started the dual at the 141-pound weight class where
Tombola Sindihebura got Campbellsville out to an early lead with a 4-3 decision over Marcus Abreu.
Michael Diemer extended the Tiger lead to six points after a 4-1 decision at 149 pounds against Dimitri Alicea.
Denver Stonecheck (ranked 18th at 149 pounds) got Life on the board with a 13-1 major decision over
David Sparks at 157 pounds. The Running Eagles took an 8-6 lead after the 165-pound match where Nosmoy Pozo (ranked third at 157 pounds) beat
Calieb Ray, 11-3.
Campbellsville ended the Life run with
Justin Brown capturing an 11-2 major decision over Anthony Carter. The Tigers took a 10-7 lead after the match, following a team misconduct penalty against the Running Eagles.
Sharon (No. 2 at 184 pounds) moved one-step closer to the 100-win benchmark after he took down Hunter Smith (ranked seventh at 174 pounds) in a 14-4 major decision.
With Campbellsville holding a 14-7 lead, Life stormed back to take a 16-14 advantage after scoring nine-straight points. Diallo Matsimeala beat
Jacob Franklin in a 7-0 decision and Dalton Bailey (ranked second at 197 pounds) pinned
Nate Jackson in the 285-pound bout.
Circling back to the 125- and 133-pound matches,
Jordan Martinez (ranked 18th at 125 pounds) regained the lead for the Tigers with an 8-4 win over Stephen Gordy.
Heading into the 133-pound match, Campbellsville held a 17-16 lead and the winner of the bout would win the dual for their team.
Aaron Rugnao came up with the big victory at 133 pounds and shutout Donovan Hough, 7-0, to give the Tigers the dual win, 20-16.
The victory snapped Campbellsville's two-match skid and gave the Tigers just their second win against a top-15 opponent this season. Campbellsville has beat the No. 6 team in the nation twice this season. The Tigers beat then-No. 6 University of Providence at the national duals, 25-18, and sixth-ranked Life on Saturday, 20-16.
Campbellsville 20, Cumberland 16
Sindihebura continued his strong afternoon as he upset Austin Meyn (ranked sixth at 141 pounds) in overtime, 11-9, starting the dual at 141 pounds. In the 149-pound match, Diemer grabbed a 5-3 decision over Evan Cole as the Tigers took a 6-0 lead in the dual.
Shonta Sisco (ranked 14th at 157 pounds) brought the Phoenix back within three points after a 14-7 decision over Ray at 157 pounds.
L.J. Henderson recorded Campbellsville's first shutout of the dual after beating Matthew Sells in a major decision, 9-0. Brown extended the Tiger lead to 13-3 after a 10-3 victory over Zach Diviney in the 174-pound match.
Sharon earned his 100th career victory following an 8-4 decision win over John Olivieri. Sharon now holds a career record of 100-23.
With Campbellsville leading 16-3, Cumberland clawed its way back into the dual with the next 10 points. DeAndre Jones (ranked eighth at 197 pounds) beat Franklin, 10-1, and after an illegal move by Jackson in the 285-pound match, Jon Floyd (ranked 15th at 285 pounds) could not continue and Floyd was awarded with an injury default to make the overall score 16-14 in favor of the Tigers.
Michael Beets slammed the door shut on a Phoenix comeback and secured the dual with an 18-8 major decision at 125 pounds over Dominic Robles. With the victory in hand,
Kolten Radaz wrestled at 133 pounds for Campbellsville, but dropped a 7-3 contest to Josh Parrett as the Tigers earned a 20-16 victory for the second time on Sunday.
With the victory, Campbellsville ends the regular season with record of 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-South Conference, to sit tied for third overall in the conference standings.
The Tigers now shift their focus to the Mid-South Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
