Sharon heads to finals on Saturday night on ESPN 3; Brown finishes sixth, Martinez eighth

DES MOINES, IowaChuck Sharon is heading to the NAIA National Championship match for the second-straight season. The 10 championships matches will begin at 8 p.m. ET from the Jacobsen Exhibition Center and will be broadcast live on ESPN 3 and the Watch ESPN app.
 
Justin Brown finished sixth overall at 174 pounds after dropping all three of his matches on Saturday, while Jordan Martinez dropped both of his matches during session three to place eighth at 125 pounds.
 
For the second-straight season, Sharon advances to the championship match at 184 pounds. In his semifinal match, the three-time NAIA All-American pinned sixth-seeded Jacob Smith of Baker University just 1:50 into the semifinal match.
 
Sharon now faces fourth-seeded Zach Linton of Doane University in the finals. Linton pinned top-seeded Cameron Jones of University of the Cumberlands just 22 seconds into his semifinal bout.
 
At 174 pounds, Brown dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to No. 10 Adrian Lyons-Lopez of University of Providence in the championship semifinals. In a tightly contested match that was tied 2-2 at the final buzzer, Lyons-Lopez earned a point via riding time after he rode out the entire second period against Brown.
 
After the loss, Brown faced off against No. 9 Chris Nile of Montana State University-Northern for a spot in the third-place bout. Brown was pushed into the fifth-place match after falling to Nile in a 3-1 decision. In the fifth-place match at 174 pounds, Brown dropped a 6-3 decision to Grand View's Lawton Benna (No. 2 at 174 pounds) to finish sixth overall in the weight class.
 
In the consolation bracket at 125 pounds, Martinez looked to keep his upset streak rolling against No. 7 Sawyer Miller of Indiana Institute of Technology. In a close bout, Martinez looked to picked a late reversal, but time ran out to send the match into overtime with the scored tied at five. In the second sudden victory period, Miller earned a takedown to win 8-6 in a SV-2 contest.
 
Martinez shifted into the the seventh-place match against No. 2-seeded Matthew Nguyen of Grand View– who was pinned his teammate No. 11 Justin Portillo in the match prior. Martinez earned an early takes down against Nguyen, but the second-seeded Nguyen regained his form and took an 8-2 lead then pinned Martinez in the third period.
 
Grand View University leads the team standings with 158.5 points, followed by Cumberlands with 99 points. The Tigers slipped in 12th after three sessions with 41 points.
 
The championship bouts are set to begin at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday night with the matches being broadcast on ESPN 3 and the Watch ESPN app.
