Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Campbellsville men's tennis dropped its first match against an unranked opponent on Wednesday evening as University of the Cumberland upset the ninth-ranked Tigers, 5-4.
Campbellsville (12-4, 3-2 MSC) got on the board first as reigning NAIA Player of the Week
Blayze O'Keefe teamed up with fellow Las Vegas native
Chrys Castro at No. 1 doubles and the duo won 8-2.
But Cumberlands (7-9, 4-1 MSC) led the dual after doubles competition, as
Alejandro Reyes and
Pablo Alonso Munoz lost No. 2 doubles while
Martin Munoz and
Alex Spalding lost at the third-seeded doubles match – both by scores of 9-8.
In singles, Cumberlands ended up taking a 4-1 lead after Reyes lost at the top-seeded match, 6-2, 6-1 but the Tigers then rallied. Castro and O'keefe both won at Nos. 2-3 singles, respectively, with almost identical scores. Castro won 6-3, 6-2 while O'keefe won 6-2, 6-1.
The Patriots then put all the pressure on CU after winning at the fourth-seeded match. Alonso Munoz lost 7-5, 6-2 and Cumberlands only needed to win one of the final matches to pull off the upset. UC did so but it wasn't easy.
Martin Munoz took set one from Rodrigo Ratte, 6-4, but then lost in identical 6-3 sets in the second and third to give the Patriots the victory.
Alex Spalding rounded out CU's scoring by coming from behind at No. 6 singles. He defeated Eric Banoud in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Campbellsville now has its final MSC dual on Friday, April 13 as CU travels to Lindsey Wilson College to round out the season. First serve goes up from Columbia, Ky. at 3 p.m. ET.
