Tigers look to return to winning ways in road test against Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After their first double-digit loss of the season, Campbellsville men's basketball will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon against RV University of the Cumberlands.

This will be the first meeting of the Tigers and the Patriots this season after each team competed in a tournament hosted by the other. On Nov. 23-24, Cumberlands was the fourth team in the Campbellsville Classic as each team played Berkeley College and Allen University then on Dec. 29-30, the Tigers went to Williamsburg, Ky. to face Xavier University of Louisiana and Freed-Hardeman University.

The men's game is slated to tip off at 4 p.m. ET or about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Lady Tigers game against Cumberlands. The voice of Lady Tiger and Tiger basketball, Matt Payton will bring you the action from the O. Wayne Rollins Center on 88.7 FM The Tiger.

LAST TIME OUT
The Tigers suffered a setback Thursday night as they fell to Life University 82-68 at the neutral site location of Reinhardt University. Life's 14-0 run in the first half saw the Tigers face their first double-digit deficit of the season and then their 16-4 run to close out the game was what pushed the Running Eagles over CU. Life's Evan Milligan had a nice night scoring 24 points on 60-percent shooting with Hagen Tyler leading the Tigers in scoring with 20 points. All three starting guards for CU in Tyler, Jacob King and Stephaun Adams scored in double figures to combine for 43 points.

MSC REWIND
The home teams all came away with victories Thursday night in Mid-South Conference play as well as a couple of streaks coming to an end. Cumberlands, who was winless so far in MSC play, knocked off No. 6 Georgetown, who was 3-0 in conference going into that game, 76-62. Fellow 0-3 MSC team, Lindsey Wilson also picked up their first conference win, also by double digits 84-67 over Shawnee State. Pikeville was the only ranked team to win Thursday as they won at home against Cumberland 77-70.

SCOUTING CUMBERLANDS
The Patriots are averaging 10 more points scored than they give up this season with an average of 77.6 points per game. They also dominate on the glass, averaging 10 more rebounds than their opponent per game with a 41.8 average.

THE RARE ROAD GAME
Believe it or not, the 20th game of the season for the Tigers will only be their third true road game this season. Overall, CU is a total of 5-3 away from the comforts of the Powell Athletic Center and 1-1 in true road contests. Their first road game of the season came early on at Lindenwood-Belleville  where they won 90-66 back on Nov. 10. Their road loss came in the Mid-South Conference opener against Georgetown when Campbellsville fell to a two-point defeat 69-67 on Jan. 5.

ALWAYS ABLE TO BOUNCE BACK
CU will hope to keep its streak of not suffering a losing streak alive on Saturday. The Tigers are currently 2-0 in their games following a loss after they defeated Freed-Hardeman 90-55 after losing to Xavier and also defeating Cumberland University 54-53 after losing to Georgetown. Even though it doesn't count towards the records for this season, Campbellsville did also win their next game after their exhibition loss to Western Kentucky when they beat Voorhees College in their very next regular season game.

MATCH-UP TO WATCH - EVANS VS. COLVIN-SELDON
A more head-to-head match-up that we may see between the Tigers and the Patriots will be a pair of forwards that are each the second leading rebounders on their respective teams. UC leading scorer Malik Colvin-Seldon will likely see himself matched up against the high energy of CU's Deion Evans. Evans, averaging about seven points and seven rebounds a game has been solid for the Tigers in just about 21.5 minutes per game. The high flier for Campbellsville has been able to energize his team or the gym with acrobatic dunks, put back slams or ally oops. Colvin-Seldon is more of a ball handler for Cumberlands averaging 14.4 points per game, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Both players mainly score from inside the arc, as each are over 50-percent from the field while only hitting just five three-pointers all season.
LUCKY NUMBER 70
Though there are many factors that play into the final result of a basketball game, the point total of 70 seems to be a key number for the Tigers. They are not winless when scoring under the 70-point but they are undefeated when scoring 70 or more points so far this season. Their record when scoring under 70 points is 1-3 with the lone win coming from their lowest point total of the season, when they scored 54 to beat Cumberland University 54-53. On the opposite side of the ball, the Tigers have at least one win on their schedule, from giving up over 90 to allowing less than 60, there is no trend for the amount of points Campbellsville allows in their wins and losses this season.

A TIE FOR 10TH
This past Tuesday marked another release of  the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll and it saw Campbellsville slide for the second-straight poll to the No. 10 spot. The No. 10 spot is actually occupied by three teams as the Tigers, Stillman and Tougaloo all received 150 voting points in the most recent poll. That tie is not the only three-way tie in the poll as there is also a three-way tie for No. 24, meaning there are 26 teams in the top-25. Georgetown moved up to No. 6 after their win over CU on Jan. 5 and Pikeville moved up one spot from No. 16 to No. 15 after starting conference play 2-1.

VERNON ALONE IN THIRD
Last Saturday's win for CU was monumental for head coach Brent Vernon in a variety of ways. Vernon earned a victory over Keith Adkins, whom he had worked as an assistant under for three seasons while Adkins was the head coach of Campbellsville. Vernon also moved his career win total to 55, good for third all-time in program history for head coach as he now only trails Adkins  and Lou Cunningham. Both Cunningham and Adkins are above the 300-win total with Cunningham's record of 335 wins and Adkins behind him in second at 322.

TYLER MOVING ON UP
Senior Guard Hagen Tyler currently has 1,731 points scored in his CU career, just moving into fifth place all by himself on the all-time scoring list. By scoring 20 points against Life on Jan. 17, Tyler passed James Boulware, who had 1,723. The last time he moved spots was when Tyler moved into sixth against in the MSC opener against Georgetown as he scored 14 points, passing Cecil Eillis. Hagen entered the top-10 in scoring all-time in CU history in the season opener against Kentucky Christian. He has moved up three spots prior to that, two spots in two games as he passed Marcio Kardosh with his 20-point game on Nov. 23 then followed it up with 21 the next night to pass Ramont Smith.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will return home for a single game at the Powell Athletic Center when they host No. 15 Pikeville in a battle of NAIA ranked foes.
