No. 8 Blue Raiders hold on late over No. 17 Tiger Wrestling on Thursday night

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Battle of Highway 55 couldn't get any closer on the wrestling mat Thursday night but No. 8 Lindsey Wilson College edged No. 17 Campbellsville to win the season rubber match, 16-15.

Trailing 16-7 going into the final three weight classes, the Tigers needed bonus points to pull off the come-from-behind win. The three-straight victories started with No. 15 Aaron Mosley at 184 pounds. He held on late over Lucas Miozza, 8-6. At 197, David Richardson came from behind and nailed a takedown with about 45 seconds left in the final period to upend Avery Buckman, 6-5. Then Ashton Mutuwa won 4-1 over Raynel Brown at 285 pounds.

The dual would have been knotted up at 16-16 but the Tigers were deducted a point after the 197-pound match as a misconduct penalty was called on the CU bench. That point was the deciding factor in the team score, but Lindsey Wilson still would have won on criteria at the end after scoring 59 match points compared to 58 for Campbellsville.

The night started in Campbellsville's favor after No. 11 Jordan Martinez earned the only bonus point victory for the Tigers with a 12-3 major decision.

There were only two bonus point wins on the night total – one for Martinez and the other for Derrick Smallwood over Campbellsville's Raymond Williams at 165 pounds, 14-3.

Aaron Rugnao also earned a close win, 7-6, as the last win for CU until the final three matches.

At 133 – No. 12 Marvin Galette took No. 9 Brady Moser down to the wire but lost, 4-3. It was the same for Jaedin Sklapsky at 141 pounds. He battled late but a knee injury in the final few seconds allowed No. 6 Trent Johnson to win, 6-4.

With the loss, Campbellsville falls to 10-9 overall in duals and 2-4 inside Mid-South Conference play. Lindsey Wilson now trails in the MSC standings by a ½ game to Life University and University of the Cumberlands, which both have a 5-0 record. The Blue Raiders are 5-1 in MSC duals.

Campbellsville will now host West Virginia Tech and Cumberland University on Friday to close out its home schedule. The Golden Bears and Phoenix start the action at 6 p.m. ET, while the Tigers will wrestle WVU Tech at 7:00 and turn around to face Cumberland at around 8 p.m.
