CU to seek win over Roberts Wesleyan to advance to national semifinal

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After winning their first pool play game of the NCCAA Tournament on Monday, the Lady Tigers will return to the pitch on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. ET to play No. 5 Roberts Wesleyan College.

PATH TO A CHAMPIONSHIP
  • With a win in their first game of play in Pool B, the Lady Tigers would be guaranteed a spot in the semifinal if they defeat Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday.
  • If the Lady Tigers were to lose, they would have to turn to tiebreaking criteria to determine if they would take the final spot in semifinal.
  • However, as CU put up seven goals on Monday, if they were to tie in this final pool play match, they would hold the tiebreaker over Roberts Wesleyan to win the pool.
  • Given the Lady Tigers advance past pool play, they would then need to win two matches to be crowned as national champion.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN VS. PIEDMONT INTERNATIONAL
  • On Tuesday, Redhawks of RWC were able to take down the Bruins of PIU, 2-0 to win their first game of the tournament and eliminate Piedmont International from title contention.
  • Outshooting, Piedmont International 38-5, Roberts Wesleyan used 53rd and 66th minute goals from Maya Rutland and Morgan Razzano to win 2-0.

LADY TIGERS LAST TIME OUT
  • CU was able to beat Piedmont International, 7-0 on Monday, Dec. 2.
  • Much like the RWC and PIU match, the Lady Tigers outshot the Bruins 35-5.
  • Campbellsville capitalized on a pair of goals to start the match from Jessie Bryson with Molly Hall tallying a couple as well. Andrea Brizuela, Jenna Croteau, and Rebecca Lilly also had goals.
  • Lakin Walls and Sangmin Cha were each able to assist on two goals. These assists gave Cha her tenth of the season to tie for second all-time in Lady Tiger history.

SCOUTING ROBERTS WESLEYAN
  • On the season Roberts Wesleyan (9-5-2) has outscored their opponents 33-15.
  • As an NCAA Division III program, the Redhawks have won three straight heading into Wednesday's match.
  • Morgan Razzano has proven to be the most effective goal scorer for RWC as she leads the team in goals with seven, on only 22 shots.
  • Israela Groves follows directly behind her as she has six goals and five assists in 16 games.
  • In goal, Kelsey Brinkel has been the main keeper and has only allowed 14 goals, while picking up 62 saves on the season.

HISTORY IN THE NCCAA TOURNAMENT
  • 2014 and 2016 are the lone years in which CU has reached the semifinal of the NCCAA Tournament.
  • In 2014, the Lady Tigers advanced past pool play with 3-1 and 2-1 wins, but fell to Lee University 3-0 in the semifinal match.
  • After an NAIA Championship berth, CU did not return to the championships until 2016, where Oklahoma Baptist halted the championship run, 2-0, in the semifinal match.
  • Last season, the NCCAA had only two pools, forcing the Lady Tigers to play three games in pool play. In these matches, CU went 1-2, failing to reach the semifinal match.

CU BY THE NUMBERS
  • Through the season, the Lady Tigers have developed quite an offensive push, outshooting opponents 438-156, while outscoring them 70-15.
  • Molly Hall and Jessie Bryson lead the scoring for Campbellsville with 12 goals apiece.
  • Sangmin Cha has set up ten goals on the season to rank second in Campbellsville history.
  • Katelyn Young has been the main goalie for Campbellsville, recording 59 saves, while allowing only 15 goals.

WHATS NEXT FOR THE LADY TIGERS
  • With a win, Campbellsville will earn an automatic bid to the national semifinal on Friday.
  • As teams will be reseeded entering semifinal play, game time would be unknown, but would take place at 5 p.m. ET or 7:30 p.m. ET.
  • If the Lady Tigers were to lose or tie, their fate is unknown, but in the situation of a tie, the tiebreaker does favor Campbellsville to advance.
