CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville men's basketball will host the rare Monday night Mid-South Conference game as they will welcome No. 17 University of the Cumberlands back to the Powell Athletic Center.
The game between the Patriots and Tigers is being played on Monday after their originally scheduled game was postponed on Thursday due to a leak in the roof of the Powell Athletic Center that was discovered during warm-ups on Thursday.
Monday's game will tip-off at 6 p.m. ET as the voice of Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball,
Matt Payton, will bring you all the action as Campbellsville basketball will air on WLCU-TV and the CU Sports Network along with their radio broadcast on 88.7 FM The Tiger.
LAST TIME OUT
CU got their third-straight win with a home victory over Life University Saturday afternoon by a final score of 83-74. The Tigers were led by a 29-point day from guard
Stephaun Adams, who hit five three-pointers and added four assists and four steals. Three of the other four starters,
Andrew Smith,
Hagen Tyler and
Deion Evans scored 14 points each and grabbed six or more rebounds led by 13 for Smith for his 11th double-double of the season. Early first half shooting woes went away as Campbellsville took a lead with about four minutes left in the first half and never gave it up for the rest of the game.
MSC REWIND
Last Saturday saw two home teams and two road teams win their Mid-South Conference games. No. 8 Georgetown was able to pull out a late victory over No. 17 Cumberlands with an 80-79 win, No. 16 Pikeville earned a nine-point win at Cumberland at 81-72 and Lindsey Wilson blew out Shawnee State by 24 with a 87-63 final score.
SCOUTING Cumberlands
The 17th ranked Patriots are 3-2 since their win over the Tigers back on Jan. 19 with wins over Lindsey Wilson, Cumberland and Shawnee State. In their most recent game, they lost a heart breaker to Georgetown where the Tigers scored the game-winning basket with under 10 seconds to play in the game.
MID-SOUTH STANDINGS IMPLICATIONS
Not much has changed in the conference standings after this game, that was originally scheduled for Thursday night, was moved to Monday. The biggest change is that now these two teams, Campbellsville and Cumberlands, are tied for third place in the conference at 5-5 with the winner of the game moving to third place all by themselves.
REVENGE TOUR
The last five games for the Tigers in the regular season are against the five teams the CU has suffered defeats to. On Saturday, Campbellsville earned a win over Life University to avenge their loss in January. Coming up is home games against Cumberlands, Georgetown, and Shawnee State followed the finale on the road against Pikeville. In every one of those games, the Tigers had halftime leads and lost by single digits, including single possession losses to Georgetown (two points), Cumberlands (one point), and Shawnee State (one point).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE
Though the points allowed stat doesn't always show it, Campbellsville's defense comes to play more often than not, especially when it comes to contesting shots. So far this season, no CU opponent has made more than half of their shots taken this season. They have surrendered a 50-percent shooting day twice this season but never greater. Along with that, the Tigers have shot better from the field than their opponents in 19 of the 25 total games they've played with a 17-2 record in those games.
PREVIOUS MEETING: JAN. 19
The first meeting between these two teams in Williamsburg, Ky. is one the Tigers would love to have back. After leading by 16 at halftime and by as much as 19 in the second half. The Patriots outscored CU 25-9 in the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 53-52 lead to eventually win by a final score of 77-76, as Campbellsville suffered their first back-to-back losses of the season.
MATCH-UP TO WATCH - taylor vs. griggs
The key offensive threat for the Patriots in that Jan. 19 match-up was guard Jordan Griggs, who scored a game-high 30 points for Cumberlands. Unable to play that game for Campbellsville due to injury was junior guard
Ronald Taylor, who routinely gets matched up to defend their opponents best scoring guard. Since returning from his injury, Taylor has played in three games, averaging 30.3 minutes per game and eight points per game. In MSC play, Griggs is tied for 17th in the conference at 13.11 points per game to lead his team in those games.
A DIFFERENCE OF THREES
There is a slight difference in style of play between University of the Cumberlands and Campbellsville and it how they've used the three-point shot this season. The Tigers have taken over 200 more three-pointers than the Patriots and have made over 100 more. That averages out to 33-percent of CU's made baskets coming from behind the arc compared to just 22.6-percent from UC. The Tigers made almost 11 threes per game compared to only six for the Patriots with CU's
Hagen Tyler and
Stephaun Adams each making over three per game and Jordan Griggs for UC making only one and a half per game.
CONFERENCE STATICAL LEADERS
At this point in the season, Campbellsville's big three of
Stephaun Adams,
Hagen Tyler and
Andrew Smith are top-two among Mid-South Conference players in a number of different categories. Adams is the league's leader in steals per game (2.3) and assists per game (5.1) while his 18.7 points per game average is good for third in the conference. Tyler is the best three-point shooter in the conference percentage-wise at 51.5 percent and his 19.6 points per game average is second in the conference. Smith is second in three categories in terms of MSC players, rebounds per game (10.3), blocks per game (1.9) and double-doubles (10).
TYLER MOVING ON UP
Senior Guard
Hagen Tyler currently has 1,845 points scored in his CU career, recently moving into fifth place all by himself on the all-time scoring list. By scoring 20 points against Life on Jan. 17, Tyler passed James Boulware, who had 1,723. Before that, Tyler moved into sixth against in the MSC opener against Georgetown as he scored 14 points, passing Cecil Eillis. Hagen entered the top-10 in scoring all-time in CU history in the season opener against Kentucky Christian. He moved up three more spots in non-conference play, two spots in two games as he passed Marcio Kardosh with his 20-point game on Nov. 23 then followed it up with 21 the next night to pass Ramont Smith.
UP NEXT
CU will only play one game next week with a Valentine's Day match-up against No. 8 Georgetown at the Powell Athletic Center Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET.
