Martinez wins 125 lbs. Mid-South Championship and nine Tigers qualify for NAIA Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – An overall successful day at the Mid-South Conference Championships was highlighted by the championship won by Campbellsville's Jordan Martinez in the 125 lbs. weight class.

Martinez won a tight 2-1 decision in the bracket finals against Randy McCray Jr. of Life University. In fact, all of Martinez's wins came by decision in the bracket as he won his first match 9-4 over Edward Barratt of Southeastern and his semifinal match 3-2 over Devaughn Sapien of Life.

With his conference championship, Martinez earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Championships in two weeks, along with eight of his teammates after their results on Saturday. Kolten Radaz (133 lbs.), Marvin Galette (133 lbs.), Jaedin Sklapsky (141 lbs.), Michael Diemer (157 lbs.), Mahlic Sallah (174 lbs.), Aaron Mosley (184 lbs.), David Richardson (197 lbs.) and Ashton Mutuwa (285 lbs.) all finished well enough to qualify for Nationals.

Radaz was the only other Tiger wrestler to make it to the finals of his bracket in the 133 lbs. weight class before he fell to Brady Moser of Lindsey Wilson in a 5-1 decision. Galette, in the same weight class, made it to the semifinals before dropping his match to Moser 8-2. Galette then went on to the consolation bracket where he had to beat Lucas Patterson of Life to earn his fourth place finish after falling in the third place match against Jacob Seto of University of the Cumberlands.

Sklapsky dropped opening round match against Trey Walton of Cumberlands by a 10-4 decision but didn't let that stop him from finishing in third place in the 141 lbs. bracket. To do so, Sklapsky won five-straight matches, including getting some revenge on Walton to earn his spot in the NAIA Championships after a 3-1 decision over Keyshawn Laws of Cumberland University.

Diemer had a similar track to his sixth place finish in the 157 lbs. bracket after he lost his opening round match against Nosomy Pozo of Life by a 20-7 major decision. He then rattled off three-straight wins before falling in the consolation semifinal to Bobby Ehman of Cumberlands in a 6-2 decision and then losing the fifth place match to Mark Taijeron of Lindsey Wilson in a 10-4 decision.

Sallah and Mosley both made their bracket's semifinal match, each losing by a six-point decision. Mosley went on to place fifth in the 184 lbs. bracket after winning the fifth place match against Jason Davis of Southeastern in a tiebreaker 11-8. Sallah won back-to-back consolation bracket matches in the 174 lbs. bracket with a pin victory over Sterling Griffin of Midway University followed by a major decision win in the third place match over Jarod Swank of Cumberlands 11-3.

Richardson won his fifth place match 13-4 in a major decision over Avery Buckman of Lindsey Wilson. He got to that spot after dropping his quarterfinal match and winning two-straight consolation rounds before falling in the consolation semifinal to David Hamil of Brewton-Parker by a 9-3 decision.

Mutuwa had a similar path as Richardson, winning his opening round match before losing in the quarterfinals to Aaron Johnson of Cumberlands in a 6-2 decision. He then won his next three matches in the 285 lbs. consolation bracket before forfeiting the third place match.

Aaron Rugnao (141 lbs.), Chandler Woenker (157 lbs.), and Gavin Smith (165 lbs.) were the Tigers unable to qualify for nationals. Smith was able to pick up two wins on the day with an opening round win over Bryce Hoffman of Lindsey Wilson in a 9-2 decision then a consolation bracket win via forfeit.

The Tigers will have two weeks to train for the NAIA Championships that will take place on March 1-2 in Des Moines, Iowa.
