No. 3 Tigers fall to No. 15 Life in quarterfinals, rally to beat Missouri Valley to stay alive

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — No. 3 Campbellsville University men's wrestling was upset in the NWCA National Dual quarterfinal round by No. 15 Life University but the Tigers rallied to stay alive for the fifth place match after beat Missouri Valley College. 

Life upset the Tigers, 34-6 but Campbellsville then came from behind to take down Missouri Valley, 30-12. 

After being No. 4 University of the Cumberlands earlier this morning, Life University kept the momentum rolling by taking control early and getting the Tigers back on their heels. 

No. 8 Jordan Martinez was upset after a pin in the second period gave the Running Eagles a 6-0 lead. Then it was another upset over previously unbeaten and No. 2 Marvin Galette. Galette rallied in the third period to force an overtime but lost with a sudden victory, 8-6. 

No. 1 Dayton Marvel also suffered his first loss of the season after a 3-2 decision to Julian Hernandez. The Running Eagles led 12-0 after three matches before Michael Diemer gave the Tigers some life at 149 pounds. He earned a come-from-behind decision, 6-5, cutting the lead to nine, 12-3. 
 
But then it was two straight wins for Life that extended the lead to 19-3. Mahlic Sallah kept the Tigers alive with a 9-5 decision at 174 pounds but David Richardson lost in the final seconds to Michael Gibson to seal the win for Life. 

Now having to turn right around 30 minutes later and deflated after the loss to Life University, Campbellsville rallied the troops to keep its streak of placing in the National Duals alive. 

Martinez earned a 10-0 major decision at 125 pounds then Kolten Radaz pinned Jacob Garrison is a feisty match to give the Tigers a 10-0 lead.

Marvel then put CU ahead 13-0 with a 3-1 decision before Missouri Valley rallied itself. The Vikings won three straight matches – two decisions and a pin – to take their first lead, 13-12. 

But that didn't last long. Sallah, Richardson, Zach Linton and Ashton Mutuwa rallied the troops. Sallah earned a 5-3 decision at 174 before Richardson major'd his opponent, 17-4. 

Wrestling his first match of the day, No. 8 Zach Linton pinned Dayton Brown is a quick 26 seconds and then it was Mutuwa pinning Josh Isaac in 55 seconds to seal the come-from-behind rally. 

The Tigers will now have a chance to wrestle for fifth place tomorrow. Campbellsville will face off with No. 10 Southeastern University at 9 a.m. ET on Mat 7 at Freedom Hall. The winner will move into the fifth-place match.
