Men's wrestling leads the way at Missouri Valley Invitational with 18 pins

MARSHALL, Mo. — A weekend where Tiger wrestling was recuperating from the NWCA National Duals, Campbellsville University traveled with 11 wrestlers to the Missouri Valley College Invitational and continued to make a name for itself.

The Tigers led the field with 18 total pins over the weekend. The next closes teams were Indiana Tech's 16 and Embry-Riddle's 12.

Six of the nine Tigers competing finished with multiple pins, while Calieb Ray led the way with four in his six matches – which were his lone wins on the weekend. Chandler Woenker followed with three in his six matches. Woenker had four total wins with the first victory coming via major decision.

Ashton Mutuwa led the Tigers with 18.5 points and finished in fourth place. Wrestling at 285 pounds, Mutuwa reached the semifinals after picking up two pins and a pair of decisions in the championship bracket. He lost to Shawn Beeson of Graceland University in the semifinal, 10-3, before beating Ethan Bunce of Marian University with a 14-1 major decision. In the third-place match, Mutuwa was forced to forfeit due to injury.

Wrestling 149 pounds, Michael Diemer finished with the second-most points for the Tigers with 14 and placed fifth. After receiving a bye in the first round, Diemer won three straight matches to reach the semifinals. He faced Tanner Abbas of Grand View in the semifinal falling with a 10-5 decision. After dropping to the fifth-place match, Diemer earned a win over Connor Holman of Oklahoma City.

Tristan Sellmer, wrestling at 157, had only one pin on the weekend but it was the fastest for the Tigers (under one minute). Sellmer reached the quarterfinal round before falling to Grand View' Dalton Jensen. He then battled his way through the consolation bracket with two wins before falling in the consolation semifinal, 4-2, and was forced to medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.

Ray earned 11 points for the Tigers. After earning four pins throughout the weekend, Ray couldn't hold down Keegan Mulhill of Eastern Oregon in his sixth match to end his tournament.

Woenker was the final Tiger to score double figure points with 10. Wrestling at 165, Woenker won his first two matches before Grand View's Giovanni Bonilla sent him to the consolation bracket. Woenker then rallied with two pins in the consolation rounds but lost a close decision, 6-4, to Andrew Null of Northwestern ending his tournament.
