Velez leads Lady Tigers at Greater Louisville, jumps into CU record books with third-best time in history

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In just her second year running cross country, Gabrielle Velez has climbed the Campbellsville University women's record books and now sits third all-time after the running of the Greater Louisville Classic at Tom Sawyer Park.

The Lady Tigers opened their season on Saturday morning and Velez led the charge with a 39^th place finish running her 5k in 19:16 – which matches Maggie Mattingly's (2010) time for third-place all-time in CU history.

In her first 2k, Velez was setting the pace in a big way with a time of 7:09 but dropped 12 spots down the stretch to 39^th overall in the women's race. The winner, Celine Ritter from Lee University, finished with a time of 17:40 to claim medalist honors.

Freshman Hailie LaMar ran her first 5k for the Lady Tigers and finished 66^th overall with a time of 19:44 - which is the eighth best time in CU history. She joins Velez as the fourth and fifth Lady Tigers in the last three years to jump into the 5k Top 10 for Campbellsville. Miranda Meeks (2007) leads the way with a career-best of 18:09.

Sophomore Hailey Shank finished in 85^th place with a time of 20:17. After running the first 2k in 7:47, Shank stepped up her pace in the final 3k with a stellar time of 13:30 jumping up the leaderboard a whopping 19 spots.

Emma Steff and T'Lea Scott, also running their first race for the Lady Tigers, placed 95^th with a time of 20:25 and 105^th with a time of 20:50, respectively.

Abiagail Coleman placed 129^th with a time of 21:50, while Maggie Parrish finished 136^th with a time of 22:22. Rounding out Campbellsville was Bridgett Siddle in 151^st with a time of 23:55.

As a team, Campbellsville finished 12^th overall in the Blue Race. Cedarville University, an NCAA DII team, claimed the title by 27 points over fellow DII institution Lee University.
