CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Following their home opening week last week where they went 3-0, the Campbellsville University men's volleyball team will get back on the road this week when they travel to Lebanon, Tenn. for a Mid-South Conference match against Cumberland University.
With their wins against Reinhardt, Goshen, and Life, the Tigers moved to 11-0 to start the season as they will play their fourth true road match of season after earning road wins during their opening weekend against Missouri Baptist, Culver-Stockton, and Quincy.
The front row foursome of
Rafael Cruz (87),
Yannik Ahr (84),
Mats Radzuweit (65), and
Ramon Matos (56) are the CU leader in kills so far this season with the next highest total over 40 kills away from Matos' total. Matos leads the team in blocks with 39 total blocks so far as the other three of Ahr, Radzuweit, and Cruz have combined for 42 blocks.
Matos' block numbers have helped him earn two MSC Defender of the Week awards in only three weeks of action for the Tigers, including most recently earlier in the day on Monday.
Campbellsville has used any combination of their three setters in
Jason Camacho,
Ryan Smith, and
Jeremy Hernandez as the trio has combined for 348 of the teams 410 assists (84.9%). Camacho leads the team with 163 assists so far with Smith in triple digits as well at 112 then Hernandez at 73 assists in only five matches played.
Smith has been strong on the front row in the attack and block game with 23 kills on 33 attacks with only two errors. He also has the second most blocks on the team at 20 so far playing three rotations on the front row in most matches.
The Phoenix of Cumberland University are 5-8 currently on the season with three common opponents in Reinhardt, Missouri Baptist, and Judson so far this season. Cumberland only beat Judson of those three teams and suffered 3-0 and 3-1 losses to MBU and RU respectively.
Cumberland's leading attacker is Mason Chambers, who has 114 kills in 12 matches played with a .185 hitting percentage. The Phoenix also have six other players with 30 or more kills on the season with Christian Lester close behind Chambers at 86 total kills so far.
The Tigers will stay on the road following the trip to Lebanon when they head to the Carolinas for matches against Belmont Abbey, Limestone, and North Greenville on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday respectively.
