Lady Tigers upset No. 7 Middle Georgia State, Tigers have been bitten by injury bug to start spring

MACON, Ga. — Tiger and Lady Tiger tennis have started their spring breaks with two matches the last two days in Georgia.

The Lady Tigers shined on Sunday with a 4-2 upset win over No. 7 Middle Georgia State before falling to William Woods, 4-0.

The Tigers have been bitten by the injury bug and have gone 0-2 during their first two spring break matches.

Sophomore Itzel Hernandez led the way and was named the Mid-South Conference and NCCAA Player of the Week after winning four matches last week. She sealed the Middle Georgia State win for Campbellsville with a 6-4, 7-5 sweep at No. 2 singles. In doubles, she teamed up with Brenda Aguilar winning 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Rebeca Scurt, Blaeke Mitchell and Emily Carbo all won their singles matches against Middle Georgia State. Scurt won 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 while Mitchell swept her No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Carbo also swept at No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-3.

Against No. 6 William Woods on the women's side, Madison Hill and Scurt won their doubles match, 7-6. In singles after trailing 1-0 in the dual, William Woods won three matches but the Lady Tigers were leading in the final two singles matches for Aguilar and Mitchell but neither finished.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will now head to Coastal Georgia for a doubleheader against the Mariners and Marian University Knights on Wednesday, March 4.
