BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Coming out of their winter break, the Campbellsville men's swimming team was able to get a strong individual performance from freshman
Ian Lopez as the freshman earned the Mid-South Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week honor.
Lopez competed in six events for the Tiges in the Asbury Cold Turkey Classic last Friday and Saturday as he earned an individual win and helped four relays finish as a runner-up. His individual win came in the 50-yard freestyle as he defeated five other swimmers in the sprint with a time of 22.34, over a full second faster than the runner-up.
His other individual event came in the 100-yard butterfly when he finished in third place with a 58.84 time after splits of 26.41 and 32.43. The four relays were a pair of freestyle relays and two medley relays as he started three of the four relays and was the anchor for the fourth.
In the 200-yard medley relay, he anchored the team by swimming the freestyle, finishing with a 22.43 split in his 50-yard freestyle sprint, just .09 seconds slower than his individual time in the 50-yard freestyle race. In the 400-medley relay, Lopez opened the race on backstroke finishing his 100-yard time at 57.22, putting his team in position just one second behind the eventual winner of the relay.
The two freestyle relays also had Lopez as the opener as he had the second-fastest 100-yard time in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing his full split at 51.71. Then in his third and final 50-yard freestyle split of the meet in the 200-freestyle relay as Lopez once again had the second-best time on the team with a 23.14.
The swimming teams are scheduled to compete at home this Saturday, but their opponent is up in the air as Life University is no longer able to compete, so Campbellsville is in search of a new opponent to host this Saturday.
