BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Campbellsville was able to bring in a top five finish at the Mid-South Conference Championships Saturday afternoon as the Tigers placed fourth overall out of seven teams.
Mahlic Sallah and
David Richardson were able to make it to the championship matches in their respective weight classes.
Sallah only had one round to make it to the finals after receiving a bye in the first round. He defeated Matthew Sells by major decision 14-4. In his championship match, Sallah faced off against Cumberland Universities Jarod Swank. Sallah and Swank traded takedowns throughout the match which pushed it to sudden victory in overtime. Swank was able to grab hold of Sallah's leg and bring him ion for the takedown to secure the 6-4 victory.
Richardson won his opening round match by a 4-3 decision over Thomas More's Andrew Taylor. He had another close match in the semi-final round when he faced off against Gabe Jacobs of Cumberlands. Richardson was able to score in the final seconds to bring in a 3-2 win to push him to the championship match.
Richardson fell to Tyler Hall in the championship match 2-1 when he was able to score an escape point in the final minute of the third period. He attempted a comeback after Hall already had an escape point along with riding time on his side.
Gavin Smith was able to see the mat four different times throughout the course of the day to lead his way from the consolation bracket back up to a third place finish. In his opening round match he earned a tech fall over Rio Grande's in the second period at 16-0. Smith would end up seeing Lindsey Wilson's Joe Koontz in the semifinal which Koontz took the victory 4-3.
Smith cruised his way through the consolation semi's to the third place match in which he saw Cumberlands Turner Black and won by a major decision of 10-2. Smith was able to bring in those needed points in the major with a wrap around in the third period.
Tristan Sellmer joined Smith in the third place category for the tournament. Sellmer had to work his way back from the start after falling in his opening round match. In the consolation quarter final matchup Sellmer won by decision 6-2 over Midway's Dayton Stafford. He was able to secure his place back in the place rounds with a win in the consolation semi match with a 9-7 decision win over Jacob McNutt. In his third place match, Sellmer dominated from the start of the match and earned more than five minutes of riding time on Midway's Kevin Almond in route to winning 12-3.
Brandon Miller,
Cameron Henderson, and
Jaden Sonner were able to come away with fourth place finishes in their tournament. Miller had to wrestle six times over the course of the day. The highlighted match of his day came in the consolation semi's with his victory over Cumberland Universities Pacey Najdusak 5-3.
Henderson was able to earn two falls on his day. He earned his first against Ryan Franco in the second period while his other fall came against Thomas More's Jordan Hoselton also coming in the second period. Sonner was able to fight off a leg injury early on in the tournament and was able to fight through and back up to his fourth place finish. Sonner won two straight matches in the consolation rounds. His first came against Midway's Isaiah McDougal earning a fall in the first period at the 1:14 mark. Sonners second came against River Henry in the consolation semi's which he earned a fall early on in the second period of the match.
Tombola Sindihebura earned a fifth place finish while going (2-2) on the day. He was able to win the fifth place matchup against Midway's Anthony Caruso by fall late in the first period.
Alex Coleman rounded out the placement for the Tigers with his sixth place finish on the day. He was able to secure a victory over Niko Bussell by fall early in the first period.
Campbellsville finished with 104.5 points which was 0.5 points behind Thomas More to tie for fourth place overall at 105 points. Lindsey Wilson won the team title 159.5 points while Cumberland University was able to place second with 137 team points.
The Tigers will await the official qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships in Wichita, Kansas in two weeks.
