MURRAY, Ky. – Campbellsville's Lady Tiger harriers were able to record a fifth place team finish in the midst of an NCAA Division 1 field at the Murray State Racer Open.
Over the course of a brutal 5,000 meter course, a 1:20 spread aided CU to 119 team points, just missing a sub-21:00 team average.
The Lady Tigers packed in groups through much of the tough terrain.
Gabrielle Velez,
Hailie LaMar, and
Emma Steff stayed within an arm's reach throughout the first two miles before the Velez and LaMar used a slight surge to separate themselves from Steff.
Separation between Velez and LaMar only came through the final 200 meters of the race as the senior outkicked the freshman and the two were able to close in the race's top 20 finishers. Velez (20:29) recorded 18
th while LaMar followed three seconds later.
Steff did not trail by much as she was able to mark a 23
rd place finish in 20:54.
Hailey Shank and
Maggie Parrish were the other two ladies in uniform for CU. Shank and Parrish worked side-by-side much like the front group before Shank pulled away for a 32
nd place finish in 21:23. Parrish was not far behind, marking a 21:50 for a new season best.
The Lady Tigers' 119 points enabled them to finish fifth as Morehead State took the top spot with 51 points.
Campbellsville will now wait for racing decisions to be made before moving on to their next race of the spring season.
