MOBILE, Ala. – During the NCCAA National Championships, the Campbellsville University men's and women's tennis teams had four total representatives on the NCCAA All-America teams for the 2020-21 seasons.
All four members, one men's and three women's players, were selected to their respective All-America First Teams as
Raul Safont represented the Tigers as
Brenda Aguilar,
Angela Mendoza, and
Rebeca Scurt earned the honor for the Lady Tigers.
In Safont's first season at Campbellsville, he led CU from the No. 1 singles position to a 12-4 record with all of his matches coming at the top of the lineup. In doubles action, Safont shared the court four different partners to a 13-5 record, the most wins of any Tiger in doubles play, splitting time at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles mainly.
Aguilar was the experienced leader of the Lady Tigers in 2020-21 as the only roster member over junior status as she finished the regular season with an 8-6 singles record and a 12-4 record in doubles play. Aguilar's singles success came mainly from the No. 2 position as she went 7-3 there compared to 1-3 as the No. 1.
Mendoza only lost two matches in singles play all year at a 12-2 record on the season, going 9-1 in Mid-South Conference matches. Playing the bulk of her matches at No. 3 to an 8-2 record in that position, Mendoza also went 2-0 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots this season. In doubles play, Mendoza only lost once to an 11-1 record, playing mostly out of the No. 3 spot.
Scurt tied for the team lead with 15 singles wins to a 15-2 record as the primary No. 4 singles player to her 8-1 record from that position. Scurt also picked up wins as No. 1 (1-0), No. 2 (2-1), and No. 3 (4-0) on the season. In doubles action, she went 12-4 with a variety of partners as her highest number of matches came from the No. 2 position.
The Tigers is currently in the middle of a delay in their match against Dallas Baptist and will continue Pool Play at the NCCAA Championship tomorrow afternoon against University of Northwestern.
The Lady Tigers are preparing for their first round match at the NAIA Championships that will be played on May 18 against Tennessee Wesleyan.
