MARSHALL, Mo. — The #19 Tigers of Campbellsville University's wrestling team traveled to Missouri Valley College Friday to participate in the college's open invitational.
Zeke Escalera capitalized on a tremendous performance and was able to capture first place in the 133 lb. weight bracket.
In the 133 lb. weight class, Escalera received a bye in his first round and then went 3-0 on Friday with two decision victories over wrestlers from #1 Grand View University, (RV) Southern Oregon University, and Briar Cliff University. With four participants remaining in the championship bracket Saturday, Escalera won in the semifinals with a major decision over #2 Life's wrestler and then in the finals with a decision to take the championship defeating another Life University opponent.
Dayton Marvel, with the 149 pounders, went 3-1 Friday winning with a major decision in the opening round over #7 Southeastern University, a technical fall in the second, and then with a 10-7 decision over #7 Jack Latimer of #1 Grand View. Marvel then lost a major decision to #17 Brevin Balmeceda from #2 Life University. Saturday, Marvel fell in his opening round in the consolation bracket to a competitor from #14 Menlo College.
For the 197 lb. bracket,
Curtis Thomas had a bye then won by decision over #18 Embry-Riddle University and, for his second match, posted a major decision victory over Midway University's representative. Thomas then fell in the quarterfinals to #8 Marian University's #10 competitor Jack Servies. Thomas won over (RV) Texas Wesleyan and #7 Southeastern to advance to the fifth-place match where he lost to #2 Life University thus grabbing his sixth-place finish.
Cameron Henderson (133 lbs.) went 3-2 defeating his opening round York College opponent in a 1:10 pinfall while losing in a decision in the next taking him to the consolation bracket where he put both his opening opponents in pinfalls for wins. Henderson then lost in the third round in a decision.
Chandler Woenker (165 lbs.) also split with a pinfall and then a decision loss in the second round to take him to the consolation bracket. There, Woenker defeated (RV) Wayland Baptist, York College, and #12 Cumberlands wrestlers. Woenker would lose his fourth consolation bracket round before securing seventh place with a pinfall over (RV) Wayland Baptist.
Jaden Sonner, with the 184 lb. class, followed his teammates with a 1-1 performance pinning his (RV) Texas Wesleyan opponent to kick things off and then succumbing to a pinfall himself in the second round to his #20 Baker University competitor. Then, Sonner lost in his opening match in the consolation bracket to a #12 University of the Cumberlands wrestler.
Campbellsville men's wrestling will next be at Lindsey Wilson College for a dual on Friday January 28
th.
