PULASKI, Tenn. – The Campbellsville University men's basketball team headed to UT Southern of Pulaski, Tennessee for their first Mid-South conference competition.
To begin the match, Malik Muhammad made the first basket for the Tigers. UT Southern clawed back as they began their offense with a six-point scoring run. Muhammad and Malachi De Sousa were able to accumulate a couple jump shots, but then the Firehawks transcended with 15 consecutive points. Jace Wallace put an end to UT Southern's offensive trek with a jump shot of his own. The game was a back-and-forth battle, but the Firehawks had gained the upper hand. Campbellsville seemed to have trouble breaking through UT Southern's defense.
At the half, Campbellsville had been forced into 10 turnovers which the Firehawks had converted in to 17 points. The Tigers forced the Firehawks into six but did not muster any points from them. UTS had a total of 17 rebounds compared to Campbellsville's eight. The Tigers were shooting at a 37% from the field-goal whereas UT Southern accumulated a 63.3%.
The second half opened with the Firehawks at the free throw line. UT Southern then went back-to-back with three consecutive threes. Jarius Key went to the charity stripe twice to add four-points to the Campbellsville's score. The Tigers were suffering a 30-point deficit with 13 minutes remaining in the half. Cameron Willis and Chandler Clements combined offense to reign the Tigers trail in. Campbellsville could not seem to stop UT Southern's stamina as they fell deeper into their discrepancy. After an endless trek, the Tigers fell to UT Southern 92-52.
As the game concluded, the Tigers were shooting 29.6%. Campbellsville did fall short in ball handling as they were forced into 20 turnovers. The Firehawks demonstrated offensive and defensive strength with their 40 rebounds and 24 assists compared to the Tigers 23 rebounds and 10 assists. Wallace led his team offensively with 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
The Tigers will remain in Tennessee as they face-off the #20 Cumberland University. Saturday afternoon's tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET following the Lady Tigers 2 p.m. ET start time.
