SEWANEE, TN – The Tigers won the Igloo Invitational for the first time in program history over the weekend finishing with 818 team points.
Campbellsville got off to a hot start to the weekend winning the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Sebastian Escobar,
Llewellyn Crewe-Brown,
Lucca Motta, and
Luis Castro won the event in 1:29.33 finishing inside of one second ahead of Bethel University.
In the 500-yard freestyle Escobar,
Grant Luckett, and Eli Slaughter swept the top three spots. Escobar led the way with his time of 4:40.16, Luckett was second at 5:32.71, and Slaughter was third in 5:40.97. Slaughter was able to hold off the charger Eric Lane from Bethel who placed fourth in 5:42.77.
Bosco Barrero placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Barrero was inside one second of second place with his time of 1:02.34 while second place was 1:01.89. Castro won the 200-yard backstroke and set the school record for the event. Castro held even splits throughout the event and touched the wall in 1:58.00, a five second gap over second place.
Escobar earned more key points for the Tigers in the 100-yard freestyle with his victory coming in a time of 46.62. Williams Luciano was the next Tiger to earn a top three finish over the weekend. Luciano was third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.34.
In the 400-yard medley relay Campbellsville was able to finish runner-up in the event behind Bethel. Crewe-Brown, Barrero, Escobar, and Castro completed the event in 3:39.75. Castro and Luckett completed the 1650-yard freestyle later in the meet. Castro won the event in 17:18.54 while Luckett was third in 19:26.93. Castro kept a 3.90 second range between each lap.
The next relay to earn a win for Campbellsville was the 800-yard freestyle relay. Escobar, Crewe-Brown, Motta, and Castro touched the wall in 7:18.05, 20 seconds over Bethel at 7:38.20. The Wildcats returned the favor in the 200-yard medley relay. Bethel won in 1:39.47 while Campbellsville was second in 1:40.17.
Late in the meet, Barrero earned runner-up in the 400-yard IM in 4:43.34. Crewe-Brown saw his first individual win of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke. He outreached UT Southern's Matt Swanson with a time of 54.83 while Swanson touched the wall in 55.46.
Campbellsville swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Escobar led the way in 1:41.80, Castro was runner-up in 1:48.51 while
Benjamin Burnison earned the bronze in 1:53.30.
In the final event of the meet, the Tigers walked away with one final victory. Escobar, Motta, Crewe-Brown, and Castro won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:16.64 which was 3.54 seconds faster than Bethel at 3:20.39 in second place.
"I am super proud of my whole group, we went into this meet eyeing first place on the men's side and aiming for second on the women's side, and we did it" said head coach
Casey Bradstreet. "We achieved many season, career bests, and some team records and national provisional cuts. I am so proud of their efforts, and their results. They continually kept their eyes on our goals and worked together so well as a team, utilizing our team objectives, and honoring our values."
The Tigers will now have the remainder of the 2022 season off before returning to the pool on Friday January 6
th when the team travels to Centre College for the Centre Invitational.
