WALESKA, Ga. – Tiger wrestling made their season debut at the Reinhardt Duals on Friday and the Life University open on Saturday capturing impressive victories through both.
On Friday, the Tigers participated in the Reinhardt Duals. Campbellsville would faceoff with Keiser University and Reinhardt. In their first dual with the Seahawks of Keiser, CU never trailed throughout the match.
Izaeah Beavers got the Tigers rolling quick with a fall in 27 seconds.
Dawson Show followed suit with a victory via the decision, 4-4.
Nick Moore,
Jake Hurst and
Gavin Smith (#4 nationally at 165) would put the dual to rest with three consecutive pins. Smith bested the #7 ranked Matt Jenkins as Hurst picked up a win over #13 Cole Luallen, who was the #1 seed in the NAIA tournament last year. The freshman adds another huge win over big-time opponents to go along with his defeat of #19 Thad Tadosa from Cornerstone earlier this season at the Adrian Invite.
Campbellsville took a 27-6 lead with four matches left to be determined.
Brice Parks, wrestling at 174 pounds, finished off the major decision winning 17-5.
Curtis Thomas kept the momentum going with fall in 6 minutes and 34 seconds. Mid-South Conference wrestler of the week
Greyson Stevens capped off a 6-0 decision of his own.
Gabe Craig would be awarded the win via the forfeit. The Tigers won the dual, 46-6.
The second dual on the day did not go in the Tigers' favor. After dropping bouts in 125, 133, and 141, Moore tried to swing the momentum. He picked up three points with a 6-1 decision victory. Hurst and Smith would follow suit with decision wins of their own. CU trailed 12-9 with four matchups remaining. Stevens would be the last victorious Tiger, as Reinhardt would take three of the last four weight classes. The Tigers were defeated by the Eagles, 27-12.
On Saturday, Campbellsville sent down nine grapplers for the Life University Open.
Shad Slone would participate in the 165lb. weight class and run the table. The gauntlet had five ranked NAIA wrestlers, including #11 ranked Wyatt Kirkham from Southeastern. On top of that, Slone would mingle with NCAA Division I wrestlers in that same bracket. He made a statement right out of the gate with a 16-0 tech fall. Slone would follow this up with a fall in 5 minutes. He would have a closer contest with his next match, ending in a 11-6 decision. In the semifinals, Slone majored his opponent 14-5. The championship match wouldn't take place because of a medical forfeit granting Slone the tournament win.
Levid Rodriguez had a successful tournament, finishing in third place. Rodriguez's matches this year have nearly all ended in successful pins by the Tiger. He started out hot picking up two falls in almost identical times. The first one came in two minutes and fifteen seconds, and the second-round pin would end in two minutes and ten seconds. He would lose in the semifinals to the eventual champion of the 197lb. weight class. In the blood rounds, Levid earned a 12-6 decision result, heading to the third-place match. There, Rodriguez pinned #22 Nolan Cook of Truett-McConnell in two minutes and six seconds, earning the bronze medal.
