Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – Tigers pull away in the second half to secure a 75-70 win over Baptist Bible College Saturday.
The Tigers jumped out strong with Jace Wallace collecting a defensive rebound and sent a pass over to Malachi De Sousa. De Sousa seized the opportunity for a dunk as he jammed the rim to put Campbellsville on the board. Javaughn Smith kept the Tigers ahead with his three-pointer from the arc. The Patriots retaliated as they went on a 10-point offensive run to place Campbellsville at a deficit. The Tigers were falling into a double-digit shortfall, however, Smith' shots from the charity stripe reigned Campbellsville back into a single-digit trail.
The Tigers earned the upper hand in a 39-38 score entering the half after battling back late in the period.
Although Campbellsville was leading, they had fallen short in each shooting category compared to Baptist Bible. The Tigers sat at a 35% field-goal percentage as the Patriots amassed a 53.6%. Campbellsville did not display integrity from the three as they had gone 2-20. De Sousa led the Tigers with 12 points, three blocks, three assists, and five rebounds. The closest to follow was Wallace with six points, three assists, and seven rebounds.
Smith appeared in the second half ready to shoot. Smith returned to the arc three consecutive times for collect nine-points from his three buckets. The Tigers had gained a solid lead and Chandler Clements ensured Campbellsville held onto it. Clements converted his offensive rebound into a two-point bucket. The Tigers earned their largest lead of the game of 12-points as Jarius Key went for a layup. The Patriots came to trail by three-points as two and a half minutes remained. Baptist Bible resorted to fouling the Tigers in an attempt to gain possession. After suffering a foul, Wallace stepped up to the stripe and knocked down both free shots. The clock dwindled down and Campbellsville secured the win in a 75-70 score.
De Sousa completed the game as leading scorer with 21 points. Following De Sousa, Smith finalized the afternoon with a career high in scoring (16 pts). Jace Wallace finished the match with a double-double consisted of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Campbellsville began to outshoot the Patriots in the second half as they amassed a 38.7 field-goal percentage compared to Baptist Bible's 32.4%.
Campbellsville will return to the court next weekend as they travel to Williamsburg, Ky. for the University of Cumberlands Classic. The Tigers will face West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Friday for a 2 p.m tip-off.
