WILLIAMSBURG, KY – A goal frenzy took over Williamsburg Wednesday afternoon with an all-out onslaught from both teams that went into double overtime to decide the outcome with Campbellsville coming out on top 6-4.
The Tigers never lost the lead against the Patriots the entire evening. Cumberlands came in as the 3
rd ranked team in the latest poll and had not lost the entire season with a record of 15-0-3.
Angeline Kieh got the goals started early in the 18
th minute with
Johanna Staahl on the assists from the back line.
Kieh doubled the lead in the 34
th minute soon after with a give and go from
Sangmin Cha to make it 2-0. The Patriots fired back less than a minute later in the 35
th minute of play. Fontan was able to find the back of the net off a penalty kick to make it 2-1.
Two minutes later,
Jenna Croteau was able to add another goal to the tally in the 37
th minute making it 3-1 off the
Olja Ivanovic assist. Cumberlands would go on to score once more in the first half with Fontan converting again making it 3-2.
Coming out by storm in the second half, Cumberlands made sure to make their presence known that they weren't going away easily. Navajas was able to find the back of the net in the 52
nd minute of play to make the score even at 3-3.
Agatha Nimene would go on to score the next three for Campbellsville and complete the hat trick. Nimene was able to get her first goal in the 71
st minute of play off of a corner kick. Cumberlands soon equalized the score again in the 73
rd minute of play after
Rirei Sasaki came to the top of the 18-yard box and the Patriots found the net off the miscommunication.
Heading into overtime, Nimene scored off a penalty kick when there was a handball inside the box against the Patriots. In the final minute of desperation for the Patriots, a deflection in the backfield of their half led to Nimene icing it for Campbellsville in the 110
th minute of play to make the final score 6-4. Sasaki finished her night with six saves.
Campbellsville now returns to the Mid-South Conference Championship for the first time since the 2015 season. The Tigers will meet the winner of Tennessee Southern and Thomas More University.
