MARIETTA, Ga. – The Campbellsville Tigers traveled to Life University in Marietta, Georgia, to take on numerous NAIA and NCAA competitors this past weekend in the Life Open.
Jastin Kubwimana and
Antwuan Burns were named co-champions at 157 lbs. The Tigers headed back with seven total medalists.
Kubwimana and Burns outwrestled opponents on their respective sides of the bracket before meeting each other in the finals and agreeing to forfeit to each other. Kubwimana picked up a first-round pin before winning four extremely tight matches to earn the 157 lbs. Life Open Co-Champion title. Burns picked up four wins, with three won by bonus points. Burns won over Life University's Fabian Padilla in the semifinal match with a takedown.
At 285 lbs.,
Gabe Craig picked up five bonus-point wins with four pins and a technical fall before losing to Life University's Zane Lanham in the finals match to walk away with a second-place finish.
After a first-round bye,
Izaeah Beavers earned three wins before losing to Antonio Mills, an unattached wrestler, in the 125 lbs. semifinal match. Beavers' three wins came from a technical fall, pin, and decision. Following his semifinal loss, Beavers picked up a last-match technical fall win over Citadel's Marcus Wright to take third place.
At 174 lbs.,
Gabe Martinez picked up four consecutive falls before losing to Life University's Riley Smucker in the semifinals. After falling to the consolation side of the bracket, Martinez beat Life University's Will Garrett (9-3) before running into the six-match rule and ended with a fourth-place finish.
Kiernan Sherwood and
Levid Rodriguez both earned a sixth-place finish in their respective weight classes. Sherwood picked up a decision win and two pins before falling in the 184 lbs. quarterfinals (8-4) to Life University's Tyler Brandt. After winning two consecutive matches by decision, Sherwood also hit the match rule in his final match. Rodriguez picked up four pins on his way to a sixth-place finish at 285 lbs.
At 125 lbs.,
Amari Hardin won his first match by fall before losing in his second-round match. Hardin won two matches on the consolation side before being beaten by Life University's Adrian Morales.
Nick Yancey picked up three consecutive wins before losing (4-2) in the 141 lbs. quarterfinals to St. Thomas University's Thomas Williams. Yancey won his following match by technical fall, beating out Chattanooga's Yuta Otero. Yancey lost his final match of the day and finished with a record of 4-2.
At 149 lbs.,
Nick Moore went 5-1 on the day before reaching his six-match limit. Moore picked up three pins of those five wins, all under a minute.
Lody Cheatham and
Brady Jarvis also competed at 157 lbs. Cheatham finished with four wins, while Jarvis finished with five. 59.6 team points were scored among the four Tigers competing in the 157 lbs. weight class.
Sam Bertin went 2-2 in the 197 lbs. weight class. Bertin's two wins were earned by fall, giving the Tigers 5.5 team points.
Ethan Westfall also competed at 285 lbs. He picked up two wins by fall before losing to an unattached wrestler, Caleb Pruitt.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, December 1, for the Cornerstone Duals in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
