BOWLING GREEN, KY – For the first time since 2016, the Tigers won the Mid-South Conference tournament this weekend with a team score of 152 points.
Greyson Stevens led the Tigers this weekend, winning the 197 lbs. weight class. Stevens had a bye through the quarterfinal round of the tournament. He met Isaiah McDougal of Midway in the semifinals, where he by fall at the 6:50 mark in the match. He won by forfeit over teammate
Levid Rodriguez in the championship match.
Rodriguez made his way to the championship bout in a similar fashion that Stevens did. He received a bye in the quarterfinal round and met Lindsey Wilson's Isaiah Reinert in the semifinal round, and earned a (3-1) fall at the 1:35 mark in the match.
Brice Parks was the next runner-up for the Tigers on the day. Parks won his opening-round matchup in a (10-0) major decision. In his quarterfinal round, he met teammate
Pate Eastin where he won by a (5-2) decision. In the championship match, Parks fought the entire seven minutes and fell to Cumberland University's Michael Long in a (4-3) decision.
Gavin Smith made his way to the championship matchup and earned 16 points for Campbellsville. Smith won his opening round match in a fall with 1:17 on the clock. He moved on to the quarterfinal round, where he won by a major decision of (14-4) earning bonus points. Smith met Shadrick Slone in the semifinal round, where he defeated Slone in sudden victory of (3-1). Smith could not overcome the power of Cole Smith from Cumberland University and fell in the championship match in an (8-0) major decision.
The Tigers had four wrestlers earn bronze on the afternoon. Eastin, Slone,
Kiernan Sherwood, and
Cameron Henderson all placed third in the tournament to earn the team key points late in the championship rounds. Eastin's only loss of the day came from teammate
Brice Parks, but he was able to rebound and win his next three matches on the afternoon. Slone's only loss came from Smith, and he earned key bonus points in his third-place matchup, winning by fall at the 4:27 mark in the match.
After an early loss in the quarterfinal round, Sherwood worked his way back through the consolation rounds to work back up to the third-place match and win by fall with 18 seconds left to go in the match over Cumberland University's JT Oldknow. Henderson was the final Tiger to earn a third-place finish. Cameron earned his way to the third-place match with a win in the consolation semifinal matchup and won by forfeit in the final bout.
Dayton Marvel gave the team another 13.5 point boost on his fourth place effort. Marvel made his way into the semifinal where he suffered his first loss of the day. He quickly responded in the consolation final round winning in a (6-5) decision over Cumberlands Gage Hudson. Marvel finished out his day with a close match that ended in a (5-2) decision in favor of Trent Johnson of Lindsey Wilson.
Izaeah Beavers and
Jake Hurst brought in six points on the day for the Tigers. Beavers placed fifth overall on the day, winning his final match (13-7), and Hurst was able to win his opening-round matchup in a (3-1) decision.
Jaden Sonner rounded out scoring for the Tigers with his fourth-place finish on the day, earning 10.5 team points. Sonner had an early loss in the quarterfinal round and worked back to the third-place matchup, where he defeated Carlos Figueroa (5-4) on the tiebreaker to reach the third-place bout, where he fell in a (3-2) decision.
Campbellsville will conclude the season in two weeks when the team travels to the NAIA National Championship in Wichita, Kansas.
