Campbellsville can't find an answer for Cumberlands' offense in defeat

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Tigers ended their regular season against the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday. The Tigers' defensive effort wasn't enough to stave the Patriots, 73-58.

In the game's opening seconds, Jace Wallace sank the first shot. Shortly after, Chandler Clements made two layups and a jump shot, earning the Tigers six points within the game's first few minutes. The Patriots hit three three-pointers, but Campbellsville held to the lead. Midway through the half, Cumberlands made a layup that tied the scoreboard. The Tigers and the Patriots continued trading buckets as the half went on, keeping the score close but with Cumberlands in the lead. With less than five minutes on the clock, Jay Milburn stood at the free throw line, going two for two, and shortly after made a three-point jump shot. At the end of the half, the Tigers trailed the Patriots 39-34.

Going into the second half, Clements led the team with 10 points, and Jay Milburn right behind him with 7 points. Campbellsville shot 53.6% from the field and went 3-4 at the free-throw line. Cumberlands shot 50% from the field and went 2-2 at the free-throw line.

Clements made the first basket of the second half. Halfway through the second half, the Patriots scored three three-point jump shots that caused Campbellsville to fall 17 points behind the Cumberlands. Malik Muhammad stood at the free-throw line, going one for two. The second half saw stagnation in the Tigers' offensive capabilites, while on the opposite end, the Patriots were zipping the ball around until the found the open man. Cumberlands' second-half offensive fluidity proved too much for Campbellsville. At the end of the second half, the Tigers fell to the Patriots, 73-58.

By the end of the game, the Tigers finished with 26-of-58 from the field (44.8%) and 1-of-13 from the three-point line (7.7%), while the Patriots finished with 29-of-57 from the field (50.9%) and 12-of-23 from the three-point line (52.5%). The other tangible difference in the box score was the number of assists: the Patriots (24) more than tripled the Tigers's total (seven). Campbellsville had three players in double-digit points, with Clements with 14 points, Wallace with 21 points, and Jordan Graham with 10 points.

The Tigers will be back in action in for the Mid-South Conference Championship from February 21st to February 27th.
