CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - On Wednesday night, the (RV) Tigers hosted the Cumberland University Phoenix at Finley Stadium. The Tigers took the win over the Phoenix on the back of their pressing offense in the opening half and then their active defense in the latter.
The first half was set into motion with a slow offensive start. However, both teams' defenses kept a strong hold over the ball, not allowing any shots through. Halfway through the first 45, Nathan Schmidli kicked the game's first goal from a beautiful ball by Fabio Barbosa. Barbosa launched the pass from about midfield and dropped it into the box to the streaking Schmidli who navigated through a couple defenders to curve the ball into the top left corner of the net. The Tigers' offense remained strong throughout the first half, with shots from Felix Baubeng, but the Phoenix were firm in their prevention. At the end of the first half, the Tigers were ahead 1-0.
At the half, the Tigers collected two saves out of the three shots at the goal, while the Phoenix saved three out of the six shots. Cumberland did not gain any corner kicks compared to Campbellsville's four. Schmidli's goal allowed the Tigers to enter the second half in the lead.
The second half began with slow offensive efforts from both teams. Midway through the final 45, the Phoenix were yet to kick any shots at the goal. Zeezo Cassim attempted a shot for the Tigers, going just a little high on the goal. Cumberland finally attempted a shot, and it was dangerous hitting the crossbar, but it was saved. When all was said and done, the Tigers took the win over the Phoenix, 1-0.
The Tigers will be back in action, traveling to Lawrenceville, Georgia, to go against the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies on October 4th, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
