GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The Tigers sought to rebound from their overtime non-conference loss taking on #13 Georgetown College Tigers on Thursday night. Although Campbellsville came close to the lead in many instances and kept things competitive, Georgetown took the Battle of the Tigers, 82-71.
The first half kicked off with a slow start, with neither team scoring in the first couple of minutes of the game. Georgetown was first on the scoreboard with a dunk and a three-pointer. Campbellsville made it to the scoreboard with Chandler Clements at the charity stripe. Both teams kept their scoring plays low, only reaching double digits on the score halfway through the half. The opposing Tigers kept hold of the lead, going repeatedly to the basket with crisp passes and slashes to the cup. Those easy buckets piled up quickly and, at the end of the first half, Campbellsville trailed Georgetown, 47-30.
Unlike the first twenty minutes, Cobe Penny landed the first two baskets of the second half, making the Tigers first scorers of the second half. It wasn't until a few minutes later that the opposing Tigers made their first bucket of the second half with a dunk. Both teams faced opportunities at the free-throw line, bringing the score to a tighter deficit for Campbellsville, while Georgetown kept pulling away at opportune times to keep a relatively comfortable cushion. Late in the half, a tip-in by Jace Wallace brought the Tigers a couple points closer to reaching the advantage, but the opposing offense kept finding easy interior looks in response. Although Campbellsville boosted their game to catch-up causing tensions to rise, Georgetown ultimately took the victory, 82-71.
At the end of the game, the Tigers simply could not answer the rival Tigers' interior dominance, scoring only half the amount Georgetown had (40 to 20 points in the paint). Those looks close to the rim translated to a better field goal percentage too for the opposing Tigers: 46.2% to 38.7%. Three Tigers reached double-digit point totals during the game: Wallace with 22 points, Penny with 15, and Tyrelle Hunt with 12.
The Tigers will be back in action hosting the Cumberland University Phoenix on Saturday, February 3rd, starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.
