CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The #5 Campbellsville University Tigers hosted the Midway University Eagles on Friday night. On senior night, the Tigers won nine of the ten matches, winning 39-2.
To open the night at 125 lbs., Caleb Thomas wrestled Andrew Vogeler. Thomas earned a three-point takedown, taking an early lead over Vogeler. With another takedown and eight back points awarded, Thomas won by an uncontested technical fall, 16-0, giving the Tigers their first five team points.
Troy Kennedy took on Tyrique Simms for the 133 lbs. match. With a takedown and a point for an escape, Kennedy and Simms each had four points, respectively. The rest of the points added to the scoreboard favored Kennedy, ending the match with a 7-4 decision win and adding three more points to the Tigers' team score of 8-0.
At 142 lbs., Nicholas Yancey earned the first three points of the match over Kyler Adams with a takedown. Adams worked his way back to tie the match at 4-4 before Yancey earned the go-ahead point. The match was tied back at 5-5 shortly after and sent into overtime. Yancey earned one final takedown and won by sudden victory, giving the Tigers an 11-point lead over the Eagles.
Bryant Beane competed at 149 lbs., taking on Chris Sperin. Beane started with a takedown, earning the first three points of the match. Sperin answered with reversal points and two takedowns of his own, winning by decision, 9-3. Midway gained their first team points of the dual, leaving the team score at 11-3.
At 157 lbs., Jake Hurst pinned Brent Hudgins in just over a minute, adding to the team score and advancing the Tigers' lead 17-3.
Brady Jarvis took on Jabril Williams at 165 lbs. Williams took an early lead over Jarvis, leading 6-2. Jarvis answered with an escape, reversal points, and a takedown to take the lead, 7-6. After working his way back to the lead, Jarvis pinned Williams in the third period. The Tigers took a 20-point over the Eagles, 23-3.
At 174 lbs., Gabe Martinez took on Sebastian Hutchinson. Martinez took control early with two takedowns and two sets of back points before earning one final takedown to win by technical fall, 17-1.
After the first period of the 184 lbs. match, Kiernan Sherwood and Noah Barclay remained scoreless. By the end of the third period, the score was tied at 1-1. Sherwood took control with a three-point takedown, winning by a sudden victory of 4-1. Midway was awarded an unsportsmanlike conduct call, taking away one of their team points and leaving the score at 31-2.
Grayson Stevens took on David Emfinger at 197 lbs. Emfinger took the first points of the match with a takedown. Stevens answered back to gain two points of his own, 3-2. Emfinger added two more points to his side of the scoreboard with escapes before Stevens tied it at 5-5 with a takedown. Before the end of the match, Stevens was awarded the go-ahead point, winning 6-5. The Tigers led the Eagles 34-2 with one match remaining in the dual.
At 285 lbs., Jaden Sonner controlled Aaron Garcia throughout the match. Sonner earned his first three points with a takedown, followed by two sets of back points before the end of the first period. With more back points and another takedown, Sonner won with an uncontested technical fall, 18-0.
The final team score read 39-2 in favor of the Tigers.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, February 4th, to compete in the Cumberland Open in Lebanon, Tennessee.
