Hay's career-high 26 points leads Lady Tigers past #10 Wildcats, 68-50

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The #3 Campbellsville University Lady Tigers took the court for their first neutral-site game of the season and earned a significant top-ten victory, defeating the #10 Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats 68-50 on Friday night. Whitney Hay was dominant, pouring in 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting to lead all scorers as the Lady Tigers moved to 2-0 on the young season.

Campbellsville Tigers Story Banner 25-26

  • Whitney Hay (26 points, besting her previous career-high of 24) and Dea Bradley (15) led the offense, with both reaching double-figure scoring.
  • Hay was the game's high-scorer and added a team-best six rebounds and three steals. Bradley provided the key outside shooting, draining two of the team's three-pointers.
  • The Lady Tiger defense was stifling, holding the Wildcats to just 32.3% shooting from the field (20-for-62) and a frigid 18.4% from beyond the arc (7-for-38).
  • Campbellsville controlled the interior, outscoring Indiana Wesleyan 38-20 on points in the paint and winning the points-off-turnovers battle 10-7.
  • Friday's victory is Campbellsville's first and largest win against Indiana Wesleyan since 2009.
  • The Lady Tigers will be back in action for their second day in McKenzie, Tennessee, to take on the Johnson University Royals tomorrow, Saturday, November 1st, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.

Senior Tyra Flowers opened the game with a layup for the first basket of the contest. The Wildcats quickly retaliated with a jumper to tie the score, but the rest of the quarter belonged to Whitney Hay. Hay's relentless scoring propelled the Lady Tigers, as she poured in 10 first-quarter points on 4-of-7 shooting. Despite her efforts, Indiana Wesleyan kept pace, and at the end of the first quarter, Campbellsville held a narrow 18-15 lead.

Much like the first period, the Lady Tigers were first to score in the second, with an Ella House layup coming off Hay's first assist of the night. Dea Bradley followed that with a three-pointer to extend the lead. Hay's action in the paint remained Campbellsville's biggest strength, as she added eight more points in the period. The defense also stiffened, holding the Wildcats to just 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting in the frame. At the half, the Lady Tigers had stretched their advantage to nine, 34-25.

The second half began slowly, with neither team scoring for the first minute and a half. The Lady Tigers broke the drought at the 8:08 mark when Hallie Allen converted an and-one layup and free throw. After a pair of Hay free throws, Talynne Shearer struck with a layup to push the lead to 41-27. The Wildcats retaliated from beyond the arc, but their foul-heavy action brought the Lady Tigers to the charity stripe. Campbellsville went 8-for-9 from the line in the third quarter, including two free throws from Hay at the 2:06 mark that gave Campbellsville its largest lead to that point at 17 points, 49-32. Going into the final quarter, the Lady Tigers held a 50-37 advantage.

Dea Bradley, who finished with 15 points, opened the final period with a layup to officially reach double digits. Indiana Wesleyan increased its shooting in the paint, with two of its players combining for 12 of the Wildcats' 13 points in the quarter. Allen and Hay, however, did not stand down at the sight of pressure. They combined for eight points in the final frame, and a layup from Shearer with 1:58 on the clock gave Campbellsville its largest lead of the game at 20 points, 68-48. From there, the Lady Tigers closed out the impressive 68-50 victory.
